Day 1: God Prepares Soil Before Planting Life

Growth begins long before seeds break the surface. Just as farmers till hard ground, God works beneath the surface of our lives, relationships, and communities to create conditions for thriving. This preparation often goes unnoticed—like roots deepening in drought or compost enriching barren dirt. Trusting God’s timing means recognizing that delays aren’t abandonment. What looks like waiting is divine groundwork for harvests we can’t yet imagine. [39:12]

I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. (1 Corinthians 3:6, NIV)

Day 2: Redirecting Tantrums to Plant Seeds of Hope

A child’s meltdown in a grocery aisle isn’t just chaos—it’s holy ground. Choosing curiosity over judgment transforms these moments. Asking “What’s wrong?” instead of silencing tears plants seeds of dignity. Redirection—like helping a child strategize saving for a toy—teaches resilience. Every interaction holds potential to cultivate hope or crush spirits, especially with those society overlooks. [45:12]

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. (Proverbs 22:6, NIV)

Reflection: When have you redirected frustration (yours or someone else’s) into a teachable moment? What practical step could you take this week to “water” someone’s hidden potential?

Day 3: Modeling Truth When Lies Take Root

Children absorb actions louder than words. A mother coaching her child to lie to social workers—“Say I’m not home!”—sowed deception that later bore shame. Conversely, parents who apologize for mistakes model redemption. Our lived example either nourishes integrity or fertilizes dysfunction. What we normalize at home becomes the harvest in our communities. [51:46]

Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body. (Ephesians 4:25, NIV)

Reflection: What unconscious “lies” (like hiding emotions or avoiding hard conversations) might others be learning from your example? How could vulnerability become fertilizer for truth?

Day 4: Announcing Freedom vs. Cultivating Its Soil

Juneteenth reminds us proclamation alone doesn’t guarantee liberation. Emancipation required rebuilding lives amid hostile systems—a lesson for spiritual freedom too. Churches can declare “All are welcome!” yet crush souls through indifference. True freedom grows where dignity is protected, wounds are tended, and belonging is practiced—not just preached. [54:19]

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1, NIV)

Day 5: Letting God Prune Us to Bear Fruit

We can’t cultivate others without being cultivated. God’s pruning—like a gardener cutting back dead branches—often feels like loss. Yet surrendered hearts become fertile ground for nurturing others. A parent’s apology after overreacting, or a leader embracing feedback, models how brokenness births growth. Our willingness to be reshaped determines what harvests we’ll witness. [59:06]

He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. (John 15:2, NIV)

Reflection: What “dead branches” (habits, defenses, or fears) is God inviting you to release? How might your transformation create space for others to grow?

Sermon Summary

Paul says, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase,” and that one verse carries a whole theology of family, church, parenting, leadership, community, and ministry. God gives the growth, so none of God’s people gets to be the whole story. One person may plant, another may water, somebody else may tend the soil, and somebody years later may see fruit from something that was planted long before.

Pentecost was not the end of the story. Pentecost was the beginning of a Spirit-filled life. The fire fell, but God’s people had to live with what the fire started. Roots came before fruit, placement mattered for thriving, and now cultivation becomes the work in front of the church. God is a long range planner, and before God places life, God prepares what that life will need to grow.

God places seeds in human care. A child is a seed, and so is a relationship, a word, a ministry, a calling, a dream, a visitor at the door, a family seeking food, and a young person trying to find their way. Words plant seeds, too. “You ain’t no good” can take root in a child, but “I love you,” “I see you,” and “you are valuable” can also take root and grow something holy.

Kindness at a drive-through can plant joy. A calm word in a grocery store can redirect a child in the middle of a good old country tantrum. The question presses hard: is God’s people cultivating what God entrusted to them, or crushing it?

Father’s Day brings honor and honesty together. Fatherhood can plant love, wisdom, protection, faith, laughter, correction, and strength. Fatherhood can also carry absence, wounds, abuse, regret, and grief. Love has to show up in action, whether that means listening through a squeaky beginner violin, buying instruments, giving a child a snack bag in the pantry line, or becoming the support that child never had at home.

Modeling matters because children repeat what they see. Instructions may plant the seed, but example waters it. Fear may control behavior for a season, but love cultivates lasting growth.

Juneteenth speaks the same word. Freedom must be more than announced. Freedom has to be cultivated in places where dignity, healing, justice, and love can actually live. God does not free people so they can turn around and crush what God placed in their care. God frees people to cultivate life, and God also prunes the cultivator first.

Others are waterers. Some of us are tree removers named Scott and Randy. Some of us are shade providers. Others are protectors of young roots and are called to encourage what is just beginning to grow. And sometimes you may not see the fruit right away.”

“So I challenge you with this. Are you willing to allow God to cultivate what's inside of you so that you're able to cultivate what's in somebody else? That's the hard part. God get the pruning. Ouch. That hurt. Don't do that, God. Yeah. But you need to be straight. Yeah. I cannot cultivate what's into some other person if I haven't allowed God to cultivate. So the challenge is, well, are you willing to say, oh, God, here I am. If you can use anything, Lord, you can use me. And that includes cultivating and fixing me so that I am able to plant a seed in somebody else.”
