Do Not Be Afraid: Sent to Join God's Mission

Jesus continues his conversation with the disciples after looking over the crowds with a broken heart. Jesus sees people “harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd,” and Jesus tells the disciples to pray for laborers in the harvest. Then Jesus does something interesting. Jesus answers that prayer by sending the disciples themselves.

The disciples are not an all star team. The disciples misunderstand Jesus, argue about greatness, get things wrong, and stumble their way after an extraordinary Lord. Yet Jesus chooses them, gives them authority, and sends them to heal, proclaim good news, and participate in God’s work in the world. The mission is bigger than they are, so Jesus gives them what they need.

Jesus’ word before they go is not exactly a pep talk. Jesus tells them not to expect better treatment than he receives. Faithfulness may bring misunderstanding, rejection, and even tension inside their own families. The threefold command, “Do not be afraid,” tells the truth about the disciples: they are afraid, and honestly, who would not be?

Fear makes sense when the future is uncertain. The season of discernment at Holy Trinity, the “god pause,” asks the congregation to slow down, pray, listen, and ask where God is calling this church to join God in loving and reconciling the world. That is exciting, and it can also be scary. God may call Holy Trinity somewhere unexpected, toward something bigger than its comfort zone or confidence.

Jesus does not say, “Do not be afraid because everything will be easy.” Jesus does not say everyone will love the disciples or that struggle will disappear. Jesus says not to be afraid because God is with them. The sparrow that cannot fall apart from God’s care and the hairs that are all counted speak a deep word: God knows, sees, cares, and has not forgotten.

The good news is not that discipleship is easy or that disciples always get it right. The good news is that God knows flawed people completely and loves them anyway. Grace abounds. Jesus knows rejection and pain from the inside, yet Jesus continues to love, forgive, call, and send.

Jesus still sees hurting people, lonely people, burdened families, and souls wondering if anybody notices. Jesus still tells followers to pray for laborers, and Jesus still uses ordinary flawed people to answer prayers they have not yet heard. If God is calling, God will equip. If God is sending, God will go with them. Pray. Listen. Follow.
