Be Doers of the Word: God's Gifts and Obedience

James grounds the believer’s response to God’s Word in the character of God Himself. Every good gift and every perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, and there is no variation or shadow of turning in Him. God is not like a changing world, a shifting moral climate, or the fears that rise around new technology. God has always been God, will always be God, and can be trusted when difficult things come.

The Father of lights gives no evil, though trials and trouble surely come. God’s unchanging love means that sin must be faced, but it also means that forgiveness and restoration remain available through Jesus. The perfect gift from above is eternal life in Jesus Christ. God brought believers forth by the word of truth, not because He had to, but because His love provided the only way sinners could be forgiven and made new.

James then turns from the Giver to the one who receives. The implanted Word is not meant to go in one ear and out the other. The believer who has received Jesus should want to know God more closely, serve Him more dearly, and put His truth into daily life. James says to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. That one verse can change a family when God’s people quit talking over one another, listen to hearts, and answer with words that come from God.

Human anger usually does not come from righteous indignation. Selfishness blows up and blows out, and much of what gets blown out cannot be taken back. God’s Word slows the heart down, helps believers hear what others are truly saying, and gives grace to respond calmly.

James calls the believer to become a goer, not merely a hearer. Filthiness is like wax in the ears that keeps a person from hearing what God is trying to say. The Word of God acts like a mirror: it shows the mess, the unforgiveness, the disobedience, and the people who still need to hear about Jesus. A person who looks in that mirror and walks away unchanged has deceived himself.

The perfect law of liberty does not leave God’s people trapped in empty religion. God’s Word calls them to forgive, love, give, witness, worship faithfully, and put feet to their prayers. Jesus remains God’s perfect gift for those who do not know Him, and obedience remains the clear call for those who do.
