James calls God’s people to be quick to listen to the word of truth, slow to speak, and slow to anger. The word of God brings sinners into the kingdom, gives rebirth, and saves souls, so hearing it should never be treated lightly. Human anger does not produce God’s righteousness, especially when the Spirit uses Scripture to correct something that people would rather not hear.
James pictures moral filth and evil like earwax that keeps a person from hearing clearly. That filth is prevalent, and it must be put off like nasty, sweaty clothes before entering the house. The battle is daily because anything that keeps the heart from longing for God’s word also keeps the life from obeying it.
James then presses past hearing into doing. A person can show up, sing the songs, hear the Bible, and still seriously miscalculate what it means to follow Jesus if nothing changes after leaving the building. The word must be planted in the mind, heart, and soul until it becomes the very livelihood of the believer. Ezra gives the progression: study the law of the Lord, obey it, and then teach it. Jesus gives the same test in John 14: the one who loves Him keeps His commands.
James warns that hearers who do not do are like people who look in a mirror and immediately forget what they saw. Information is not bad, but downloading information without seeking transformation is self-deception. The word should still be shaping conversations at lunch, family dinners during the week, social media posts, prayer, witness, service, and every other part of life.
James contrasts that forgetful glance with looking intently into the perfect law of freedom. The doer stoops down, investigates, researches, studies, reflects, and perseveres in the living and active word of God. God’s word is inspired, infallible, inerrant, authoritative, and all sufficient because God Himself is all sufficient.
James does not say that anyone is saved by works. Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection save sinners who repent and call on His name. Ephesians says that those saved by Jesus’ work are then saved to do the good works Christ prepared. Life is a vapor, and the time for sitting and soaking is over. Christ calls every believer, until the final breath, to be a doer of the word and not a hearer only.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Hearing without obedience deceives the heart. James does not permit a faith that gathers information but refuses transformation. A person can be around the word constantly and still be fooling himself if there is no intention to obey it. Christ’s commands expose whether hearing has reached the heart. [47:19]
- 2. Moral filth blocks spiritual hearing. James pictures sin as something that clogs the ears and hinders hearing God clearly. The fight against evil is not optional because a heart full of worldly noise will not long for Scripture. God’s word must be received humbly after sin is honestly put off. [40:55]
- 3. Love for Jesus keeps His commands. Jesus does not separate affection for Him from obedience to Him. Songs, words, and religious activity cannot replace a life that keeps His word. Love becomes visible when Christ’s commands govern ordinary choices. [45:59]
- 4. The perfect law brings true freedom. James calls God’s law the perfect law of freedom because obedience does not imprison the believer. God’s word frees the heart from deception, sin, and wasted living. The blessed person keeps looking intently and persevering in what God has said. [57:16]
- 5. Christ saves believers for good works. Christ alone saves sinners through His finished work on the cross and resurrection from the grave. Good works never purchase salvation, but redeemed lives cannot remain idle. Ephesians places good works after salvation as God’s prepared path for His people.
