Bible ReadingJames 1:19-27 “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
[02:37]Matthew 22:36-40 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law? And he said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
[04:35]Galatians 5:13-23 “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
[18:39]Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.”
Observation questions- In James 1:19-20, what three responses are believers told to practice, and what does James say human anger cannot produce? [14:05]
- In Matthew 22:36-40, what are the two greatest commandments, and how are they connected to each other?
- In Galatians 5:19-23, which behaviors belong to the flesh, and which qualities belong to the Spirit? Which of those fleshly behaviors especially overlap with James 1? [18:39]
- James 1 uses the picture of a mirror, and the message used the pictures of a colander, a pitcher full of rocks, and an empty pitcher. What does each picture show about a person’s response to God’s Word? [28:35]
Interpretation questions- James says believers should be quick to hear. If the heart can be deceitful and fearful voices can shape a person, what does it look like to hear God’s Word first instead of simply reacting to whatever feels strongest in the moment? [10:45]
- Jesus says loving God comes first, and loving neighbor follows from it. Why is love for people not meant to be separated from wholehearted love for God? [06:40]
- James says anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. How can anger feel morally right and still keep a person from the kind of life God wants to form? [17:30]
- James warns that hearing without doing is self-deception. What kinds of religious habits can make a person feel spiritually healthy while little is actually changing in daily life? [29:51]
Application questions- Where is it hardest right now to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger—at home, at work, online, or somewhere else? What usually sets that reaction off in you? [08:00]
- Many voices compete to disciple the heart. What voice has had too much influence on your inner life lately—your own feelings, constant news, social media outrage, fear about the future, or something else? What would it look like to make more room for God’s Word this week? [12:12]
- Sin contaminates what God wants to pour through a person. Is there a pattern in your life that you have been excusing, comparing, or minimizing instead of confessing? How might that be affecting what others receive from you? [24:03]
- Some lives are like a colander: good things come in but pass right through. When have you noticed God’s truth not really sticking with you? What habits or distractions might be making that happen? [29:15]
- Some lives are like a pitcher full of rocks: not always bad things, but crowded lives. What good but crowded-out things may be taking up your time, attention, or emotional energy so that love for God and people gets squeezed out? [31:15]
- Some lives are like an empty pitcher, absent from receiving. Have you been wandering, hiding, or simply distracted lately? What would help you receive again instead of trying to give from empty? [32:46]
- Pure religion moves toward people who cannot pay it back. Who are the “orphans and widows” in your world right now—the overlooked, the vulnerable, the inconvenient, the forgotten? What is one concrete way you could move toward them this week? [36:36]
