Bible Reading
1 Corinthians 12:12-27“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.”
[09:47]“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.”
[09:56]“For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?”
[10:07]“And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?”
[10:17]“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body?”
[10:32]“But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.”
[10:45]“Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.”
[10:54]“For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.”
[11:08]“And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.”
[11:26]“Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
[11:34]1 Corinthians 12:4-7“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.”
[17:42]“And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.”
[17:47]“And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.”
[17:53]“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”
[19:22]1 Corinthians 12:18“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.”
[24:11]Romans 12:4-5“For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.”
Observation questions
- What three kinds of differences does Paul name in 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, and what repeated truth connects all of them? [18:02]
- In Paul’s body illustration, what are the two opposite statements made by the foot and the eye, and how do both statements threaten unity? [40:31]
- According to 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, what does God do with the members of the body, and what is supposed to happen when one member suffers or is honored?
- What examples of gifts and assignments are named, including work that happens in public and work that happens behind the scenes? [25:42]
Interpretation questions
- Paul says that spiritual gifts are given “to profit withal,” meaning for the good of others. What does this show about the purpose of a gift, beyond personal recognition or having a title? [19:22]
- Why is comparison dangerous in both directions: when someone feels they do not matter because they are not like another person, and when someone believes they do not need others? [40:43]
- If God places each member in the body as it pleases Him, how should that shape the way believers view their abilities, limitations, and present place of service? [24:20]
- What does it mean that a changed assignment is not the same as having no assignment? How might prayer, wisdom, encouragement, and presence still serve the body in a different season? [44:02]
Application questions
- Where have you been comparing your gift, opportunities, or level of visibility to someone else’s? What would it look like to thank God for the assignment He has given you instead? [28:51]
- What ability, burden, or need keeps coming to your attention—such as children, seniors, prayer, hospitality, technology, visiting the sick, finances, food, or encouragement? Could that be a direction toward where you can serve? [32:34]
- Is there an area where you have been physically present but functionally absent—watching others carry work that you may be equipped to help with? What is one realistic step you could take to help fill that gap? [37:14]
- Hidden does not mean unimportant. What behind-the-scenes work in the church or community do you tend to overlook? How can you show honor and gratitude to people who serve in those ways? [29:11]
- When another person or ministry is doing well, is your first response joy, comparison, or criticism? What would it look like to celebrate their fruit as a victory for the whole body? [42:05]
- If age, health, work, or family responsibilities have changed what you can do, what can you still give in this season—prayer, encouragement, wisdom, direction, generosity, presence, or another form of service? [43:34]
