Wisdom is the principal thing, because what people do not understand, they abuse, whether it is their body, their money, or their relationships. Isaiah 43 says God is doing a new thing, making a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. God’s new thing often springs forth as a seed, not as a big splash. Zechariah 4:10 warns against despising the day of small things, because skepticism can miss the beginning of what God has already started. Correction and rebuke come first to produce repentance, renew the mind, and bring radical obedience.

John 2 puts the kingdom key in plain words: “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Mary speaks to servants who are ready at a moment’s notice, not to people sitting back and watching. Doing means making ready, preparing, producing, and becoming part of the cause God is bringing forth. Christ calls for the same fight once spent chasing the world to now be spent pursuing His kingdom.

Jesus tells the servants to fill six large waterpots to the brim, draw out the water, and take it to the master of the feast. Obedience positions a person for God’s miracles, including moments where God bypasses a process that could never happen naturally. Water does not become fine wine by human effort, yet Christ saves the best for last. God calls His people to stop taking shortcuts, get radical with themselves, and obey what He says, because the best is yet to come.
