DNA DIARIES | JOHN 5: 16-30 | Minister Shawneece Floyd

John 5 sets Jesus before Jewish leaders who cannot handle what happened at the Pool of Bethesda. Jesus had just healed a man who had been bound in his condition for thirty eight years, but the problem in their eyes was not the healing power. The problem was the permission. The Jewish leaders assumed that healing on the Sabbath meant Jesus was using God’s power outside of God’s will.

Jesus answers by saying, “My father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working.” The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. God did not rest because he was tired. God gave rest so his people could stop working, reflect on his goodness, and be refreshed under his care. So when Jesus healed that man on the Sabbath, Jesus was not breaking the purpose of the day. Jesus was fulfilling it. The father gives rest, and the Son gives rest too.

Jesus’ actions become a page in his “DNA diary.” The Son looks like the Father and acts like the Father. The children of God should also have actions that reflect relationship. Forgiveness, giving, love, and mercy are not random good deeds. They are family traits.

Jesus then presses the deeper issue. The Jewish leaders got angrier because Jesus called God his Father. They could see God as high and holy, but they could not understand God as near, present, and fatherly. Jesus was not trying to grab equality with God for selfish advantage. Jesus was showing the dynamic of his relationship. The Son does nothing by himself. The Son depends on the Father, listens to the Father, and does what the Father does.

The Father’s love for the Son also means the Father shows him all things. The works of Jesus are not for Jesus to show off. They are signs so others may be amazed and come to know the Father. Gifts are not given so somebody can sit on them or act like “all that and a bag of chips.” If Peter had kept the catch to himself, he would have drowned with the blessing.

Jesus finally reveals that he is the giver of life and the judge of all. His word gives eternal life right now to those who hear and believe, and his voice will raise the dead on the last day. At judgment, the issue will not be a pile of good works. The only solid ground is Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. All other ground is sinking sand.
