Divorce, the Kids & Priorities

Jesus meets hard subjects with truth that must be applied to minds, hearts, feelings, and everything else. Mark moves fast because he wants new Gentile believers to see who Jesus is, how God’s power was revealed through his life, miracles, and words. Jesus’ words on divorce do not lower God’s standard just to make people feel better, and they do not permit people to add shame where God offers grace. Marriage begins in God’s design, where two become one flesh, and Jesus points past Moses’ concession for hard hearts back to God’s lifelong covenant purpose.

Marriage is a gift from God, but it is not a command for every person. Marriage, when entered into, is meant to mirror God’s covenant relationship with his people and cannot be treated as temporary or optional. Divorce is never presented as God’s desire, even where sexual immorality, abandonment, or covenant-breaking abuse have brought real damage. Forgiveness and reconciliation remain possible, though reconciliation does not mean ignoring harm or forcing a broken relationship back together.

Jesus welcomes divorced people to follow him. His forgiveness covers all sin, including sin connected to divorce, and his people must become a place that fights for marriages while also restoring the harmed, betrayed, deserted, repentant, and broken. Forgiveness is not optional, even when the other person cannot or will not receive it. God can heal what has haunted a person for decades, and the church must help carry that burden.

Jesus becomes indignant when the disciples hinder children from coming to him. Parents bring children to Jesus by making their relationship with God the greatest investment of time, attention, schedule, and example. Childlike faith is not childish faith. Childlike faith trusts, depends, comes humbly, stands in wonder, loves freely, and forgives quickly while mature faith leaves whining, selfishness, and spiritual laziness behind.

Jesus then exposes the rich young ruler’s real barrier. The man comes with the right question, but he treats salvation like something he can achieve and Jesus like a teacher he can admire. Jesus calls him to surrender what he loves most because Jesus does not merely want to be helpful in a person’s life. Jesus wants to be Lord over every part of it. The man walks away sad, yet Jesus looks at him and loves him. God makes possible what human effort cannot accomplish, and everyone who truly calls on the Lord with dependent, surrendered faith can be saved.
