Divine Jealousy: Cultivating Exclusive Love for God
Devotional
Day 1: Divine Jealousy: A Call to Exclusive Devotion
God's jealousy is not rooted in human emotions like insecurity or envy. Instead, it is a divine expression of His deep desire for an exclusive relationship with us. This divine jealousy is beautifully illustrated in James 4:5, where it is said that God jealously desires the spirit He has made to dwell in us. This spirit is the deepest part of our being, akin to the heart, and God desires it to be wholly His, much like a husband desires the exclusive love of his wife. This divine jealousy calls us to a life where God is our first love, above all else. It is not about control but about a deep, loving relationship. [00:53]
"For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." (Exodus 34:14, ESV)
Reflection: In what ways can you ensure that your relationship with God remains exclusive and undivided, much like a faithful marriage?
Day 2: True Devotion: Love Over Duty
Our relationship with God should be based on love, not just duty or service. Many Christians mistakenly equate seeking God's kingdom with mere activities like missionary work or church attendance. However, God desires our spirit, not just our actions. Our relationship with Him should be like a marriage, where love is the foundation, not just duty or service. This means that our love for God should surpass all other loves, ensuring He is our first priority. [03:45]
"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." (Deuteronomy 6:5, ESV)
Reflection: How can you shift your focus from merely serving God to truly loving Him with all your heart?
Day 3: New Covenant Living: Internal Devotion Over External Achievements
The New Covenant emphasizes internal devotion over external achievements. Our victory over sin, our good deeds, and our spiritual gifts are secondary to our love for Christ. The true mark of a believer is not their external achievements but their internal devotion to Jesus. This is the essence of being the Bride of Christ, where our spirit is reserved for Him alone. [06:22]
"For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people." (Hebrews 8:10, ESV)
Reflection: What internal changes can you make to ensure your devotion to Christ is genuine and not just based on external actions?
Day 4: Paul's Godly Jealousy: A Pure Bride for Christ
Paul's ministry to the Corinthians reflects God's jealousy. Despite their spiritual gifts, the Corinthians lacked devotion to Christ. Paul desired to present them as a pure bride to Christ, free from spiritual adultery. This is the calling for every believer: to love Christ with all our heart, soul, and mind, ensuring that He has the preeminence in every aspect of our lives. [10:11]
"For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ." (2 Corinthians 11:2, ESV)
Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you might be committing spiritual adultery by prioritizing other things over Christ?
Day 5: Christ's Preeminence: Loving Him Above All Else
God's ultimate purpose is for Christ to have first place in everything. This means loving Christ above all else, ensuring that He is the center of our lives. This devotion leads to a life of true fulfillment and purpose. When Christ is preeminent, our lives align with His will, and we experience the fullness of His love and grace. [24:32]
"And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent." (Colossians 1:18, ESV)
Reflection: What practical steps can you take today to ensure that Christ remains at the center of your life, above all other priorities?
Sermon Summary
In today's message, I explored the profound concept of God's jealousy, a topic that is often misunderstood or overlooked. The jealousy of God is not like human jealousy, which is often rooted in insecurity or envy. Instead, it is a divine jealousy that reflects His deep desire for an exclusive relationship with us. This is beautifully illustrated in James 4:5, where it is said that God jealously desires the spirit He has made to dwell in us. This spirit is the deepest part of our being, akin to the heart, and God desires it to be wholly His, much like a husband desires the exclusive love of his wife.
This divine jealousy calls us to a life where God is our first love, above all else. Many Christians mistakenly equate seeking God's kingdom with mere activities like missionary work or church attendance. However, God desires our spirit, not just our actions. Our relationship with Him should be like a marriage, where love is the foundation, not just duty or service. This means that our love for God should surpass all other loves, including family, work, or possessions.
The New Covenant emphasizes this exclusive devotion to God. It's not about what we do for Him but about who we are in Him. Our victory over sin, our good deeds, and our spiritual gifts are secondary to our love for Christ. The true mark of a believer is not their external achievements but their internal devotion to Jesus. This is the essence of being the Bride of Christ, where our spirit is reserved for Him alone.
Paul's ministry to the Corinthians reflects this same godly jealousy.

Sermon Clips
God desires it and our spirit in our heart, we have no place for anyone or anything other than him. This is what it means to seek the kingdom of God first. A lot of people think when Jesus said you must seek the kingdom of God first, it means doing missionary work or going preaching or something like that. We always think in terms of activity. [00:03:39]
What he desires is my spirit, and if in my spirit I do not give him exclusive total authority and place in my life, I'm not a good bride and close to being a harlot, however much I may do for the Lord, however much I may serve him, even if I go for 10,000 meetings, he's not interested. [00:05:25]
The New Covenant emphasizes internal devotion over external achievements. Our victory over sin and spiritual gifts are secondary to our love for Christ. The true mark of a believer is their internal devotion to Jesus. This is the essence of being the Bride of Christ, where our spirit is reserved for Him alone. [00:06:22]
Paul uses that word jealousy again, the same word that God is just for our spirit. Paul uses it in 2nd Corinthians 11 and verse 2. He's writing to the Corinthians. They were believers. In fact, they were baptized in the Holy Spirit. They were speaking in tongues. They had so many gifts. [00:10:06]
A true servant of God, the reason why he preaches God's Word to God's people is for no other reason but ultimately and primarily that one day he might present those people whom he has ministered to to the Lord Jesus and say, Lord, here is a virgin who never fooled around with others, no harlotry here. [00:11:14]
I want a church where every single person will love you fervently, but there is no question in their mind that Christ is the one they love with all their heart, and the voice of parents and the voice of wife and children has no influence on them. Christ is Lord, and they have heard Christ. [00:12:01]
The Holy Spirit has come to the earth to find a bride for Christ, and if I am in faith with the Holy Spirit, I believe my primary passion would be not to be a good preacher, not at all. My primary passion will be to find a bride for my Savior. [00:16:41]
I want to ask each of you listening to me right now, please be honest and tell yourself, ask yourself, is there anything on earth or anyone on earth who takes precedence over Christ in your life? Does your job ever take precedence? I'm not talking about the number of hours you spend. [00:21:19]
God's ultimate purpose in this universe is described in that words: Christ must have first place in everything, and we'll discover that when we get into eternity and he's standing. You read in the book of Revelation that they all sing worthy is the lamb. He alone is worthy. [00:24:28]
I want to encourage you, my brothers and sisters, pursue this, and the way to do it is, I believe, as I've often said, there are two things that have helped me to increase in my love for Jesus Christ. One is the well-known verse in 1 John 4, which says we love him because he first loved us. [00:31:30]
The main reason many people do not love Christ wholeheartedly is because they have not understood how much he loved them, and one day when Christ comes back and we stand before him, the thing that he overwhelms us is when you see how much he loved us and said, Wow. [00:33:52]
Let's satisfy God's heart. He jealously desires our spirit. He jealously desires our heart, and let's give him a whole heart completely. Then there'll be no place in a case from today onwards. Lord, help us. You really need the part of the Holy Spirit for this. [00:37:58]
