Divine Authority, Governance, and Faithful Engagement
Devotional
Day 1: Divine Authority and Human Governance
In the complex interplay between divine authority and human governance, it is essential to recognize that while all authority is established by God, it does not always serve as a blessing to the people. Sometimes, God allows certain leaders to rise as a form of judgment or to prepare a nation for judgment. This understanding challenges individuals, especially in democratic societies, to engage responsibly in the political process. As citizens, there is a responsibility to participate actively, recognizing that votes contribute to the moral and ethical direction of the nation. This engagement is not just a civic duty but a spiritual one, as it aligns with the understanding of God's sovereignty over all authority. [05:44]
Daniel 2:21 (ESV): "He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding."
Reflection: How can you actively engage in the political process to reflect God's values and justice in your community today?
Day 2: Church Leadership and Accountability
Addressing issues within church leadership requires a balance of love and clarity. It is crucial to approach such matters with a heart of compassion, understanding that while change may not always be possible, voicing concerns can still hold value. This process involves discerning whether the issues at hand are significant enough to warrant finding a new church community. The responsibility lies in ensuring that the church remains a place of integrity and spiritual growth, where leaders are held accountable, and the congregation feels heard and valued. [12:37]
1 Timothy 5:19-20 (ESV): "Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear."
Reflection: Is there a concern within your church community that you feel called to address with love and clarity? How can you approach this situation prayerfully and constructively?
Day 3: Understanding Anointing
The concept of being "anointed" is often misunderstood within Christian circles. It refers to being equipped by the Holy Spirit for a specific task, highlighting the presence and gifting of the Holy Spirit in empowering individuals for their roles within the church and beyond. This anointing is not limited to church leaders but extends to all believers who are called to serve in various capacities. Recognizing and embracing this anointing can lead to a more profound sense of purpose and effectiveness in one's spiritual journey and ministry. [24:30]
1 John 2:20 (ESV): "But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge."
Reflection: What specific task or role do you feel the Holy Spirit is equipping you for in this season of your life? How can you embrace this anointing more fully?
Day 4: The Role of Discernment
In situations not explicitly addressed in scripture, discernment becomes a crucial tool for navigating complex decisions. Seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance allows individuals to understand the true nature of influences in their lives and make choices that align with God's will. This discernment is not just about making the right decisions but also about cultivating a deeper relationship with God, where His voice becomes clearer and more distinct amidst the noise of the world. [26:10]
Hebrews 5:14 (ESV): "But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil."
Reflection: Is there a decision or situation in your life right now where you need to seek the Holy Spirit's guidance for discernment? How can you practice listening to God's voice more attentively?
Day 5: The Danger of Lukewarm Faith
Revelation 3:16 warns against lukewarm faith, emphasizing the need for a fervent and committed relationship with God. Lukewarm Christians should not feel secure in their faith but should strive to rekindle their passion for God. This call to fervency is a reminder that a vibrant faith requires intentionality and dedication, where believers are encouraged to examine their spiritual lives and make necessary adjustments to ensure that their relationship with God remains alive and thriving. [36:17]
James 1:22-24 (ESV): "But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like."
Reflection: In what areas of your spiritual life do you feel lukewarm? What steps can you take today to rekindle your passion and commitment to God?
Sermon Summary
In today's discussion, we explored the complex relationship between divine authority and human governance, particularly through the lens of Romans 13:1-2 and Hosea 8:4. These scriptures present a nuanced view of authority, suggesting that while all authority is established by God, it is not always for the blessing of the people. Sometimes, God allows certain leaders to rise as a form of judgment or to prepare a nation for judgment. This understanding challenges us, especially in democratic societies, to consider our role in governance. As citizens, we have a responsibility to engage with the political process, recognizing that our votes contribute to the moral and ethical direction of our nation.
We also delved into the responsibilities of church leadership and the challenges of addressing issues within the church. It's crucial to approach such matters with love and clarity, understanding that while we may not always effect change, our concerns can still be valuable. Additionally, we discussed the concept of being "anointed," which refers to being equipped by the Holy Spirit for a specific task, a term often misunderstood in Christian circles.
The conversation also touched on the importance of discernment, especially when faced with situations that are not explicitly addressed in scripture. We are encouraged to seek the Holy Spirit's guidance to navigate these complexities. Lastly, we examined the idea of lukewarm faith, as described in Revelation 3:16, and the importance of maintaining a fervent and committed relationship with God.

Sermon Clips
"let every soul be subject to the governing authorities for there is no Authority except from God and the authorities that exist are appointed by God now it's very interesting because at the end of Romans chapter 12 uh Paul told Christians under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of course it was the Apostle Paul writing but um we believe that every word that's in the scripture is inspired by God so God was leading him this is the word of Paul and the word of God that the Christian is not to seek personal Vengeance however that doesn't take away the government's authority to punish wrongdoers" [00:02:25]
"the authorities that exist are appointed by God now in the very next verse Paul will explain that whoever resists The Authority resists the ordinance of God since governments have their Authority from God we are bound to obey them unless of course governments order us to do something in contradiction to God's law then we are commanded to obey God before man that principle stated very clearly in Acts 4: 19 but it's actually sort of throughout the Bible that our obedience to God comes first and even though God establishes human authorities on many different levels no human authority stands in the place of God" [00:04:22]
"God appoints a nation's leaders but and please listen carefully here not always to bless the people sometimes it is to judge the people or to ripen the nation for judgment now let me add this one last point in a democracy or a Democratic Republic the people have a share in the governing Authority I understand it's a small share it's one vote out of millions in a larger Nation such as the United States it's a small share but it's something here's my challenge to you believer if you live in a democracy are you fulfilling the role God has given you as part of that democracy" [00:05:48]
"when Wicked or incompetent leaders come to power friends it's not like God took the day off at the very least God could have stopped such a thing and he did not yet those who supported the leader will have their responsibility before God you know According to some recent surveys there are uh 41 million self-identified Christians in the United States who plan to not vote in the upcoming election friends that's wrong it's a poor use of the share we have in the governing Authority now I understand that somebody may consider that both candidates are unattractive that both candidates have plenty of flaws okay I get that but yes um I think you should choose the candidate that's less bad" [00:09:19]
"one this is a very difficult issue I I understand how it's difficult for parishioners or congregants church members whatever term you want to use to sort of speak to church leaders about uh problems that they have in the church they often feel that they're not met with a very kind or good reception and folks I get that um I know it can be discouraging um having been on the church leadership side in some sense I understand that look you just got to be aware that when you're a church leader you will get people from time to time who think you're wrong about a particular Doctrine who think you're not doing enough of this or enough of that who think you should stop doing this or for that you know I mean the the the complaint can be out of practice it can be out of Doctrine whatever it is" [00:12:03]
"present your concern as lovingly and as straightforwardly as you can but you have to decide if that means that you shouldn't attend that church anymore we all understand and one Carlo I I understand you you know this that there is no perfect church and everybody with every church has some things that they wish were different listen that's true for the leadership of the church the pastor the Elders of your church have things at your church that they wish were different and maybe they're working towards those things so yes State your concern and love but you have to decide if this is significant enough to where you think you should attend a different church" [00:14:47]
"anointed generally has the idea of being blessed by and if I could use more specifically equipped by the Holy Spirit to do something this comes from the setting and the terminology of the Old Testament in the old test you see to anoint somebody means to um apply some kind of oil or lotion or medicine to them um you could say that if you put um you know lotion on your arm you're anointing your arm with oil or lotion or whatever that's simply what the word anoint means and in the Old Testament God would anoint Kings prophets specific individuals and that anointing was symbolic of the Holy Spirit coming upon them oil in the Bible is a very interesting sort of symbol or picture of the presence and the work of the Holy Spirit" [00:22:13]
"the only thing I can recommend to you is that you pray that God would give you if I could connect to this to the previous question you pray that God would anoint you with the gift of discernment this is something that the Bible describes that there is a gifting of the holy spirit for discernment and why do we need disc well dip test for the very reason why you describe because sometimes it's difficult to know truth from error not not when the Bible speaks clearly about something friend and people pretend that the Bible doesn't speak clearly about it so the Bible speaks clearly about many things and praise the Lord for that however the Bible doesn't speak about everything" [00:25:35]
"you are right to be concerned about lukewarm Christians now what does lukewarm mean well lukewarm describes a temperature State that's kind of in the middle it's not cold that water would be cold it's not hot you would describe that water as hot I mean I'm just stating the obvious somewhere in the middle neither cold nor hot is lukewarm and Jesus rebuked this church because they were lukewarm they didn't have passion one way or the other what is really fascinating is Jesus said I wish you were one extreme or the other it's almost as if uh Jesus is saying I I wish you were wholeheartedly against me or wholeheartedly for me it's that apathetic middle that Jesus was so revolted by" [00:32:04]
"ultimately not merely by appearance But ultimately you're either in the Kingdom or you're out that there's not a middle ground now I I say ultimately because by appearance there are people in a middle ground but not ultimately ultimately we're either in God's kingdom or not where is the line between so lukewarm that you're actually cold and you're not hot for God at all I don't know and I would think that maybe it's impossible to tell from the outside but I would say this a lukewarm Christian should have no sense of security I don't want to come to a lukewarm or compromising Christian and Pat him on the back and say don't sweat it bro once saved always saved no that wouldn't be my word" [00:36:17]
"God's answer with the storn of the flesh was to say Paul prayed that the thorn of the flesh would be taken away from him and God said basically no Paul I'm not going to take this away from you but I'm going to give you the grace to endure it my grace is sufficient for you my strength will be made perfect in your weakness that was God's answer to Paul in the midst of his Thorn In the Flesh well God didn't want us to think that his grace was sufficient for people who only had one kind of problem whether it was persecution whether it was slander whether it was a physical infirmity whatever it was God didn't want us to think that his grace was sufficient only for that one thing but friends I want you to know his grace is sufficient for you no matter what your particular Thorn In the Flesh is" [00:39:04]
"the genuiness of your faith being much more precious than gold and perishes though it is tested by fire may be found to praise honor and Glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ okay uh so for the proof of our faith who is our faith being proved two well let me say this Freya number one it's not being proved to God now God knows our level of Faith uh so it's not like God needs a trial in our life for it to be revealed but who doesn't know well number one we may not know the level of our faith but other people may not know so Freya I would say it's primarily for our s but it is true that in a secondary sense it demonstrates the genuiness of our faith to other people" [00:47:48]
