Acts 8 puts Philip on a desert road, far from the crowds in Samaria, because God cares about people who find themselves on the outside. The Ethiopian eunuch is an insider in the political world. He is in the room where it happens, trusted with the queen’s treasure, respected in his position, and important in his nation. Yet the eunuch is an outsider when it comes to the family of God. His Gentile identity limits him to the outer court, and his status as a eunuch keeps him from converting to Judaism under the Mosaic law.

God does not leave this man outside. God arranges a divine appointment, sending Philip from a fruitful and public ministry to meet one single individual on a desert road. Philip’s move might have looked small compared to what was happening in Samaria, but God does not measure significance by the size of the crowd. God often places His people in what may feel like a smaller, quieter, or less visible place because one person matters deeply to Him.

Isaiah 53 becomes the bridge between the eunuch’s longing and Christ Jesus. The eunuch reads about the sheep led to slaughter, the One denied justice, humiliated, and taken from the earth. Philip begins with that Scripture and tells him the good news about Jesus. Christ Jesus lived the sinless life, received the injustice sinners deserve, absorbed the wrath of God, and gives His righteousness to those who trust Him. Every road in Scripture eventually leads to Christ Jesus, whether through the promise of His coming, the exposure of human sin, or the call to live as His people.

Christ Jesus also identifies with those who feel socially and spiritually bankrupt. His humble birth identifies Him with the lowly, and His death identifies Him with sinners. The eunuch may have heard Isaiah’s words through the pain of a man who had been prevented, excluded, and left without descendants. Yet Christ Jesus meets the excluded and brings them near.

The water on the road brings the question that sits at the center of the encounter: “What prevents me from being baptized?” The gospel removes the barrier that had kept the eunuch outside. Philip’s immediate obedience to God is met by the eunuch’s immediate obedience to Christ. God still calls people to leave sin, follow Christ Jesus, and take concrete steps of obedience without delay. The road to Gaza shows that God brings outsiders to the inside through divine appointments, His Word, and faithful response.

Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
