Discovering the True Picture of God in Jesus
Summary
Ten years ago, our family set out to show our kids the vastness and beauty of our country, realizing that maps and pictures could never compare to the awe of standing before the Grand Tetons. In the same way, many of us have inherited secondhand pictures of God—through tradition, teaching, or culture—that are incomplete or even distorted. We all carry a picture of God, but it’s often shaped by our upbringing, preferences, or denominational distinctives. The challenge is that when we elevate non-essentials—our preferences or cultural particulars—to the center of our faith, they can become obstacles, both for us and for those exploring Christianity. It’s crucial to distinguish between what is fundamental and what is peripheral, so that our faith remains both authentic and livable.
Christianity, with its many traditions and expressions, can feel like a house with countless living rooms, each with its own entrance and style. But at the core, there are essentials—truths that, if removed, would cause the whole structure to collapse. We must learn to “major on the majors,” recognizing which beliefs are foundational and which are not. For example, whether one believes in a literal six-day creation or a symbolic interpretation, it does not change the heart of the gospel or the person of Jesus. The danger comes when we treat all beliefs as equally essential, making Christianity unnecessarily rigid and, for some, unlivable.
At the heart of our faith is the person of Jesus. The Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—are not just “Bible stories” but eyewitness accounts of a real, historical figure who claimed to be God and demonstrated what God is like. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are the foundation. He declared, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” This is not an arrogant claim by his followers, but a direct statement from Jesus himself. If there were any other way to God, the cross would be unnecessary.

And the reality is that it's hard for us to know how to describe God. It's hard for us to know how to talk about God. It's certainly hard for us to know how to define God. And in fact, we sing a song that goes something like this. We sing a song that says, whatever picture I have isn't big enough. Whatever picture I have doesn't sum you up could not sum you up. that your particular denomination believes, or I've got to believe all the things that your particular church believes. And sometimes this is where it becomes a real challenge for us because we begin to kind of talk about Christianity as if it's all the same, as if all these things that we believe, all of these things that we believe to be true are all equally important. So that brings us to this series, and that brings us to this important question of what is fundamental. And this is important for those of us who are believers, it's important for those of us who grew up in church, and it's important for those of us who are new to the faith or maybe just exploring the faith. If you're someone who would say you're actually on your way out, like you've been deconstructing your faith and you've kind of got your hand on the doorknob and you're ready to move out, this is really important for you. Like before you leave, you should understand what you're walking away from. Like what are the fundamentals, what are the absolute essentials? Because when we begin to mix in our preferences, when we begin to mix in things that should be on the periphery, when we begin to mix these things in, when cultural and peripheral are considered essential, then Christianity eventually becomes untenable and unlivable for someone. You should know what are the majors. You should know, like, this is a hill I'm willing to die on. This is something that's so important to my faith that if I remove this, then everything comes crumbling down. You should also know what are the things that are not so essential to my faith that if someone else comes along and removes that piece from the Jenga, that everything doesn't come falling down, right? I'll give you an example. Talking a lot in generalities here. But I happen to believe that when Genesis says that the world was created in six days, I happen to believe that those are six literal days. Now, I know as soon as I say that, that some of you in the room think, oh my word, that's a perfect example. [00:10:05] (44 seconds)
Christians just check their brain at the door. There's no evidence for that. The earth has been around for billions and billions of years. That is just completely unscientific. I would say, actually, there's a fair amount of evidence to suggest that the earth is six days old. I would also tell you that I have some dear beloved friends who are pastors who do not believe that the earth was created in six days. They believe that each of those days talked about in the book of Genesis is a period of millions of years. [00:10:50] (34 seconds)
with my heavenly father. And so that's an example of something that we might say is a non -essential. All right. So here's where we started off week one. Week one, we looked at Peter's declaration in the book of Matthew. We looked at Peter's declaration. Remember, Jesus took his disciples up to Caesarea Philippi or Phillips Caesarea. And this was on like the edge of all things pagan. This was Jesus took the disciples to where it was literally like the edge of darkness is how the Jewish young men would have seen this, that Jesus was taking them to the very frontier of darkness and pagan worship and spirituality. And Jesus took them right there to the frontier. And he said, who do you say that I am? And Peter replied, you are the Messiah, the son of the living God. And so that was last week that gave us fundamental number one. Fundamental number one is that Jesus is God's only son and he is our only king. [00:12:07] (64 seconds)
That Jesus is the Messiah, that he is our only king, the final king promised and the only king for us. I keep saying only because sometimes we have a tendency, if you've visited other cultures, maybe you've even seen this, I've seen this particularly in South America, where people still have the ancient gods that their forefathers worshipped. And then they have a crucifix or they have a Bible right up there next to these ancient idols. And it's because when missionaries came as, you know, part of these conquering forces many centuries ago, they just added Jesus to the collection. [00:13:11] (45 seconds)
bolt on to the things that you already believe. You don't want to change the things you already believe. You don't want to change the ways you already behave, but you think that it's probably a good idea to have some insurance with Jesus. And so you add Jesus to the package. Don't get excited, Jeremy. It was figurative, not actual insurance. All right. So the purpose of Jesus' activity among them is demonstrated in what Jesus is going to talk about in these next few verses. So we're going to look ahead here at what Jesus has to say to his disciples. And this is super, super important because you're going to understand the purpose of Jesus' life is living among his disciples. Like if you really think about it, Jesus didn't need to spend three years doing all the things that he did, right? He could have just come in. It could have been a quick thing where he was like, hey, I'm here to pay the price for everybody's sins. I'm just sort of going to do this, move on. But no, Jesus stuck around for three years. And he stuck around for three years because it was really important for us to understand something essential. It was really important for us to understand something fundamental. And so Jesus actually lived with, camped with, walked with, ate with his disciples for a period of three years. So the passage we looked at last week, that was about two years into Jesus' three -year ministry with his disciples. Today, we're going to look at a passage that jumps in when it is right before Jesus is arrested, like hours before Jesus is arrested. [00:15:27] (29 seconds)
And that can be an obstacle for someone coming to faith. It can also be a burden for some of us who've like, we've grown up in the church, we've grown up believing the Bible, and then we go off to college and some professor, you know, shows us how ridiculous the story of Jonah really is. And so then we feel like, oh no, someone's pulled out this important piece of my faith and all of my faith comes crumbling down. And the reason we're so passionate about this here is because we want everyone to understand that there is a distinction, that there is a level of authenticity to the stories about Jesus. And there's something about what Jesus has come to do with us and to do for us that is, and I'm not saying that I don't believe in these early stories, okay? [00:17:25] (49 seconds)
are really important eyewitness accounts of Jesus of Nazareth, who no ancient historian disputes, was a historical figure who lived, who was crucified on a Roman cross, and who many, many people believe rose from the dead. Even the secular historians, who may not have believed themselves that Jesus rose from the dead, they document that the earliest followers of Jesus, we're going to see in just a moment what those earliest followers of Jesus were called, but those earliest followers of Jesus believed that Jesus had risen from the dead. So, here we are. Last night of Jesus' ministry, he's going to be arrested in just a few hours. [00:18:28] (48 seconds)
He would raise a glass of wine to his prospective fiance, and if she returned the toast, then they were engaged and everyone celebrated and it was a party, right? She didn't return the toast, then still a free dinner. But then the groom or the groom -to -be would say to his fiance, I am going to prepare a place for you in my father's house because they were multi -generational, intergenerational homes. And what they would do is they would just go back to the father's house and they would add on another room, add on another room out back, add on another level above, but these rooms would be added onto the father's house. Or there may already be an unused room in the house, and he would go back and he would prepare that house. And because the groom was typically a very young man, the father of the groom was the one that would decide when the time was right, when the room was ready. Because you know the young groom would be like, okay, looks pretty good. You know, if you've ever had a teenage boy, you understand when you say clean your room? It has a completely different definition, right? And so the father would be the one who would decide if indeed the room was ready for the groom to bring his bride back. So Jesus, who's referred to himself as the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the groom, the
