Discovering and Following God's Will in Our Lives

Summary

In today's gathering, we explored the profound theme of seeking and understanding God's will for our lives. We began by acknowledging the importance of community and support, particularly through initiatives like summer camps, which aim to foster life-changing decisions in young people. The central scripture guiding our discussion was Proverbs 3:5-6, which encourages us to trust in the Lord wholeheartedly and seek His guidance in all our ways.

We delved into the concept that God's will is not a mystery but is revealed through His word. Psalm 119:105 reminds us that His word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, guiding us step by step. This illumination is crucial as we navigate life's decisions, ensuring we remain on the path God has set for us.

Prayer was highlighted as a vital tool in discerning God's will. James 1:5 assures us that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God, who gives generously. Through prayer, we open ourselves to divine guidance, allowing God to direct our steps and provide clarity in times of uncertainty.

Obedience emerged as a key theme, with the story of Peter's miraculous catch of fish serving as a powerful illustration. Despite his doubts, Peter's obedience to Jesus' instruction led to an overwhelming blessing. This narrative underscores the principle that obedience to God opens doors to His blessings and guidance.

We also discussed the role of the Holy Spirit in confirming God's will. The Spirit of truth guides us into all truth, often through a still, small voice or gentle promptings. Additionally, seeking wise counsel from those who walk closely with God can provide valuable insights and confirmation of God's direction for our lives.

Finally, we considered the peace of God as a confirmation of His will. This peace, which surpasses all understanding, acts as a divine assurance that we are on the right path. It is a gift from God that steadies us amidst life's uncertainties.

Quotes

God's will is revealed in his word. He doesn't want you to be confused about what his will is for you. It's laid out in his word, and we're going to find a number of things that God says in his word how you can know that you're following God's will for your life. [00:43:41]

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. So there's two different things we can see in this verse. The first one is that God's word is a lamp to your feet. In the ancient world, they had these little lamps. [00:44:49]

The Bible Reveals His General will for all believers: how to live, what to value, how to relate to him, and how to relate to others. If we're not obeying what he's already revealed in scripture, why would he show us more? [00:45:02]

Don't conform any longer to the pattern of this world. The pattern of this world is not taking the path that God lights up for you. Don't conform to that, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. [00:48:28]

God's will is found in prayer. If we're really going to connect with God, we need to talk to him, and we need to have some quiet time where he speaks back to us. In James 1:5, it says if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God. [00:50:11]

As we come to God in prayer and in faith, asking God, "Lord, I don't know what to do next. I really need your help with this. Your word says if I lacked wisdom, I could come to you, and you would give it to me." [00:51:31]

Obedience opens up doors of blessings, doors of opportunities. Each act of obedience shows us the next step, and eventually, we arrive at the appointed destination. I want to give you an example of this, and the example was Jesus by the Sea of Galilee. [00:57:56]

Obedience to God is a fundamental principle in the Christian walk. Throughout the Bible, we see those who obey God experience his blessing, his guidance, and his favor. Obedience isn't just about following rules; it's about a relationship. [01:01:08]

God's will is confirmed by the Holy Spirit. In John 16:13, it says when the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you in all truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak. [01:03:13]

The Holy Spirit reveals to us things that are to come many times, and most of the time, it's that still small voice, that gentle whisper, that thought that comes to your mind. But I've had a couple of times in my life when it's been a loud one. [01:03:18]

God's will is settled by peace. How do you know you're making the right choice? How do you know you're making the right decision? How do you know this is what God wants you to do? I believe that God will give you a peace about it. [01:09:07]

Sometimes the peace that God gives us on the inside passes all natural understanding. Sometimes you can have things breaking loose on the outside, but on the inside, you have a peace about it. On the inside, you have a guidance of God. [01:10:30]
