Paul grounds the call to serve in Ephesians 2:10: God has created, saved, gifted, and placed each person in the church on purpose. Church is not something people merely attend. It is a family in which believers worship Jesus, grow in Jesus, and serve Jesus by serving one another. The body becomes stronger when every person brings what God has given, rather than comparing gifts or assuming somebody else will do the work.
Paul’s picture in 1 Corinthians 12 makes room for different gifts, abilities, personalities, passions, and stories, all distributed by the same Spirit. God does not make photocopies. Each person carries a unique combination of grace that matters when surrendered to Jesus. Small gifts must not be buried, because God has a history of taking what looks small, like a boy’s lunch of five loaves and two fish, and using it for something far bigger than anybody imagined. Gifts are not given merely for personal benefit, but to encourage, build up, care for, and bless others.
The church’s covenant calls believers not only to discover personal gifts but also to call out gifts in one another. Encouragement asks, “What do I see Jesus doing in you?” A word of faith can help someone recognise a calling to pray, lead, welcome, care, teach, or serve children and young people. Competition and comparison have no place where believers celebrate the grace of God in each other.
Jesus sets the pattern for service. The King became a servant, washing His disciples’ feet and showing that greatness in God’s kingdom looks very different from greatness in the world. The world asks about position, recognition, and influence; Jesus asks, “Who are you serving?” Service must rise from love for Jesus and His people, not simply from a need to fill a rota. Hidden acts matter: setting up, making coffee, praying, cleaning, sending an encouraging text, welcoming someone alone, or noticing a person who is struggling. The parts that seem weaker are indispensable.
Discipleship then keeps believers moving with Jesus. Following Him is more than agreeing with Him; it is growing, learning, changing, and becoming more like Him. Knowledge alone cannot produce Christlike love, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The Spirit patiently grows this fruit over time. God has not finished with His people, and every person, young or old, confident or quiet, long established or newly converted, has a place and a part in Jesus’ church.
Key Takeaways
- 1. God has made each person purposeful. God creates no accidental member of Christ’s body. Gifts, experiences, personality, and even difficult parts of a person’s story can become channels of grace when placed in Jesus’ hands. The question is not whether a believer has something to offer, but how that God-given treasure can bless somebody else. [37:37]
- 2. God does not make photocopies. Comparison weakens gratitude and makes believers overlook the grace already entrusted to them. Different gifts are not competing versions of the same calling; they are necessary parts of one body. A gift becomes deeply valuable not when it looks impressive, but when it is surrendered to Jesus. [40:08]
- 3. Greatness is measured by serving. Jesus overturns the world’s ideas of importance by taking the place of a servant. Hidden acts of care may receive no applause, but they are seen by God and carry real kingdom weight. Service becomes holy when it flows from love for Jesus rather than pressure to meet a practical need. [48:08]
- 4. Discipleship means becoming like Jesus. Following Christ requires more than collecting biblical information or attending gatherings. The Spirit works patiently in the heart, growing love, forgiveness, humility, and self-control over time. Slow growth is still growth, because God faithfully completes the work He begins. [53:49]
- 5. Every part of Christ’s body matters. The church needs visible leaders and unseen servants, confident people and quiet people, seasoned Christians and those just beginning to follow Jesus. No act of faithful care is insignificant when it is offered to Christ. Each person’s availability helps create a church where others can discover Jesus. [57:33]
