Jesus called us not merely to be Christians, but to be His disciples. While "Christian" has often become a simple label, being a disciple signifies a profound lifestyle. It's the difference between owning a team jersey and actually being on the team, fully committed to the uniform and the mission. Discipleship means actively following Jesus with your whole life, not just believing the right things. It's a call to a deeper, more engaged way of living out your faith. [04:41]
Matthew 4:19 (ESV)
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Reflection: How does the distinction between merely wearing a "Christian" label and actively living as a "disciple" challenge your current understanding of your faith journey?
A disciple's journey involves three dynamic movements, as Jesus Himself outlined. First, we are called to follow Jesus, walking in His footsteps and learning from His example. Second, as we follow, we are transformed by Jesus, allowing Him to shape us into who He created us to be. Finally, we join the mission of Jesus, recognizing that our salvation is not just for us, but for us to help others discover Him. This is a continuous process of growth and purpose. [06:19]
Matthew 4:19 (ESV)
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Reflection: When you consider following Jesus, being transformed by Him, and joining His mission, which of these three movements feels most active or most challenging in your life right now?
The ultimate goal of discipleship is to grow up in every way into Christ, our head. This means becoming more like Jesus in how we think, love, talk, and live. Spiritual growth is not accidental; it doesn't happen simply because time passes. We don't naturally drift towards God; we must be intentional in our pursuit of Him. Discipleship requires a clear, purposeful plan to take steady steps forward in our journey to reflect Christ more fully each day. [10:21]
Ephesians 4:15 (ESV)
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
Reflection: What specific area of your character or daily life do you sense God inviting you to intentionally focus on for growth to become more like Jesus this season?
Disciples practice their faith daily, not just occasionally. These habits are rhythms we create in our lives to stay close to Jesus and grow consistently. They are not mere tasks to check off, but intentional practices like meeting with God daily, serving faithfully, and engaging in community. Neglecting these habits can lead to a quiet, slow drift away from God. Cultivating them purposefully ensures we remain grounded and continually draw from His strength for everything else. [31:19]
Luke 9:23 (ESV)
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
Reflection: Considering the importance of daily spiritual habits, which one do you feel God is prompting you to cultivate more consistently in your life this week to prevent spiritual drift?
Jesus commanded us to "go and make disciples," making this mission non-optional for His followers. Disciples are not made through programs alone, but through intentional, relational investment in people. This process involves modeling what it means to follow Jesus, teaching from scripture, encouraging one another, offering loving correction, and challenging each other to full obedience. It's a continuous cycle of pouring into others, helping them walk the path of a disciple, and then empowering them to do the same. [49:46]
2 Timothy 2:2 (ESV)
and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Reflection: Who is one person in your life—a coworker, neighbor, or friend—that God might be inviting you to intentionally invest in and walk alongside in their faith journey, even in a small way?
Discipleship is presented as a distinct, embodied calling rather than a mere label. The call to follow Jesus means stepping off the sidelines—putting on a uniform, not just wearing a jersey—and entering a life of following, transformation, and mission. The core definition offered is threefold: be devoted to Jesus, become disciplined in spiritual formation, and duplicate that life by helping others follow. The aim is clear: growth into Christlikeness, measured by changed thinking, loving, speaking, and living. That growth does not happen accidentally; it requires intentional pathways and practices.
A helpful pathway is four relational steps: know God, find freedom from hurts and habits, grow into God’s purpose, and make a real difference in others’ lives. Those steps are lifelong rhythms, not a class to graduate from. Seven foundational truths shape the disciple’s understanding—beginning with the gospel and including God’s character, identity in Christ, scripture, prayer, the church’s mission, and sacrificial love. From those truths flow seven practical habits: daily time with God, faithful service, intentional sharing of faith, generous living, daily surrender, loving as Jesus loved, and consistent engagement in community.
Discipleship is inherently relational and reproducible. The process is not program-centered but person-centered: intentional relational discipleship (IRD) that moves people from crowd to group to one-on-one. A simple pattern—model, teach, encourage, correct, challenge (MTEC)—guides how one disciple shapes another toward obedience and maturity. Practical next steps include picking one habit to build, joining a small group, starting a one-to-one discipling relationship, and responding to the gospel if that step has not yet been taken. The invitation is both urgent and gracious: if drift has occurred, return today; if conversion has not yet happened, respond in faith and follow through with baptism and ongoing discipleship. The congregation is called to be one and make one—doing what Jesus commanded in ways that transform individuals and communities over a lifetime.
We're gonna start with a very simple statement that shapes everything that we do and everything we believe here at Disciples Church, and that is that Jesus did not call us to be Christians. Jesus actually called us to be disciples. And there is a difference. See, the word Christian actually only shows up in your bible three times. The word disciple is in there over 250 times. Like, that means it's pretty important. Right?

And so at Disciples Church, that's what we're doing. We are putting on the uniform of a disciple. That means we're gonna do some things that other people may not be doing. So at Disciples Church, I I really believe that every single one of us is called to be more than than just someone who believes the right things. We're actually called to follow Jesus with our whole lives, And so, we wanna help others do the same thing. And that's why we say it like this around here, to be one and make one.

So number one, we need to meet with God daily, not just on Sundays, but every single day. Because spending time with God is the most important thing that we do as disciples. K? We spend time with God because you don't stay close to Jesus by accident. Relationships, any relationship, it only grows through intentional time together. And our relationship with God is no different. And so we spend time with him daily by opening his word, by talking with him in prayer, by responding to him in worship. And this is not about checking off a spiritual box to say, hey, I accomplished that task, or just rushing through a devotional so you can say, I didn't miss a day. No. No. No. This this is about slowing down to actually spend time with him so that you got time and space to actually listen to him, to be shaped by him, to be reminded of who God is and who you're becoming in Christ. And so, disciples, we prioritize time with God because we recognize that everything else we do flows out of that space.

Right? Following Jesus as his disciples means that every day, I'm choosing to surrender. Like, I'm choosing to surrender my life to his will as my Lord. And your comfort and your personal preference will always take the back seat. That means that when you don't feel like waking up earlier to spend time with God, what are you gonna do? Surrendering daily means when when sin is knocking at my door and it looks so tempting and so good, what am I gonna do? Surrendering daily means that when the Holy Spirit gives me that nudge to tell that person about Jesus, but you know it's about to be a really awkward conversation, what are you gonna do? Because disciples surrender daily by saying, not my will, but your will be done. So we surrender daily. Number six, we love like Jesus.

Okay? So these are your seven habits. Okay? I know it was a lot shotgun blast at you. Please know these are not boxes to check off of a to do list. These are rhythms that you create in your life to keep you close to Jesus and help you grow as a disciple. And can I just tell you, in all honesty, even as a pastor, the times in my life when I ended up feeling far from God, it wasn't a big dramatic moment? It was just distractions, just busyness. And these habits just started to slowly stop. Some of them disappeared. And before you know it, I looked up, I looked around, I was like, man, I don't like where I am. I don't like how far I am from God in this moment. And I don't think that anybody just wakes up one day far from God and goes, man, how did that happen? It happened over time. Because because drift is quiet, and drift happens slowly. But when you stop the habits, let me tell you, drift is inevitable. Like, it will happen.

``I've been claiming to be a Christian. I've been saying I'm a disciple. I've been showing up to church, but man, if I'm honest, I I think I've drifted. Can I just tell you about the the beauty of the grace of God found in a sunrise? Even in cloudy gray overcast Chicago, the sun still comes up every single day. And every day that sun comes up, it's a reminder that it's a brand new day, that today is a fresh start. And today can be the day that you get real with God and you tell him something that he already knows, but you tell him, God, I've drifted, and I don't like it. And God, today, I wanna I wanna commit to come back to you. Today is the day that I I wanna I wanna start practicing the the practice of a disciple. I wanna start walking the path of a disciple. Today is the day, God, that I I wanna I wanna take off the jersey, and I wanna put on the uniform.

So for Disciples Church, let me say this as plainly and as clearly as I possibly can. Making disciples is not optional. It is commanded. If we are to be one, we must make one as well.

Like, some of you had aspirational goals to get in shape and go to the gym this year, and you still haven't been. Right? That means it's still an aspirational goal. Like, it hasn't become a habit for you yet. And so we're gonna take those seven habits, and we're gonna actually work on them, maybe one at a time. And so, that's the be one step. But I also want you to take another kind of step. Right? What kind? A make one step. You guys are so smart. You're just on it. I love it. And so, I want you to take a make one step, and that could be to join a small group. Right? We we got a bunch of them starting up in, February. Or you can start a discipling relationship. Find somebody one on one and start walking through this booklet with them. Just one little thing at a time. Just work through with it. Or just be obedient to God. Just say yes when he prompts. That that maybe it's it's talking to your coworker about their faith, and it's it's gonna start slow. It's gonna start small, but you're just gonna keep being obedient to what God is telling you to do. Because at the end of the day, here's what we gotta understand. Jesus didn't change the world through crowds. He had crowds, but that's not what changed the world. He changed the world through disciples.
