Bible Reading Luke 5:1-11 (ESV) 1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, [Jesus] was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Ephesians 4:11-14 (ESV) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
Observation Questions - In Luke 5:8, Peter responds to Jesus’ miracle with fear and shame. What does Jesus say to reassure him, and what new purpose does He give Peter?
- According to Ephesians 4:11-14, what is the purpose of leaders like apostles, prophets, and teachers in the church?
- The sermon mentioned that rapid church growth in places like Tanzania and the Philippines often outpaces access to theological training. What specific statistic was shared about trained pastors in these regions? [50:45]
- Psalm 119:1-8 describes a life shaped by God’s law. What words or phrases in these verses emphasize action (not just belief)?
Interpretation Questions - Why do you think Jesus called Peter—a flawed, unprepared fisherman—to lead others, rather than waiting until Peter was “qualified”? How does this relate to the idea that “discipleship begins at the edge of competence”? [51:43]
- The sermon warned that churches without rooted teaching can become “unstable” and “vulnerable to error.” How does Ephesians 4:14 explain this danger, and what real-world examples might illustrate this today?
- The sermon shared Gabriela’s story of transformation through discipleship. How does her testimony show that spiritual formation is about more than gaining knowledge? [55:14]
Application Questions - Jesus called Peter in the middle of his ordinary work. Where in your daily life (work, family, hobbies) might God be inviting you to step into a role you feel unqualified for? What’s one small act of obedience you could take this week?
- The global church needs leaders trained to teach Scripture faithfully. How could you practically support this need—whether through giving, prayer, or advocacy? [57:25]
- Formation “reshapes affections, habits, and decisions.” What habit or routine (e.g., prayer, Scripture reading, serving others) could you prioritize to deepen your spiritual roots?
- The sermon asked, “What step of faith receives resistance?” Is there an area where fear or doubt is holding you back from trusting God’s call? How might you surrender that to Him? [58:47]
- Gabriela’s story shows how investing in one person can multiply ministry. Who in your life could you intentionally encourage or mentor in their faith journey this month?
