The journey of discipleship begins with a divine invitation. Just as Jesus walked along the beach of Lake Galilee and called Simon and Andrew, He extends a personal call to each of us. These fishermen, engaged in their regular work, were asked to embark on a new kind of life, becoming fishers of men and women. To be a disciple means to be a dedicated learner and follower, actively imitating the Master's life, adopting His values, and carrying on His work. This involves transformation, commitment, and often significant sacrifice, as we strive to live like Jesus and spread His message. [17:25]
Matthew 4:18-20 (ESV)
While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Reflection: How does the immediate response of Simon and Andrew challenge your own readiness to follow Jesus when He calls you to something new?
Even in seasons of uncertainty, trials, and tribulation, the scriptures teach us that Jesus had compassion. He was touched by the needs of the people and moved by a strong desire to meet them. It is easy for our hearts to harden when difficulties arise, causing us to lose the essence of who we are. Yet, we are encouraged to continue trusting in the word of God and not allow what we see or hear to make us feel forgotten. God loves each and every one of us, and His love remains steadfast. [14:38]
Romans 8:38-39 (ESV)
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Reflection: In what specific area of your life have trials caused you to harden your heart or question God's presence? What practical step can you take this week to lean into God's love and compassion for others, even when it's difficult?
To be a disciple means to be captured by God's purpose for your life. This involves being in awe of what God has done and is doing, allowing your spirit to be arrested and surrendered to His will. Many attend church, shout, and praise, but have not truly been captured in this profound way. Discipleship requires more than just being a Christian; it demands an active effort and a willingness to be a representative of Christ wherever you go. God does not choose the lazy and inactive, but the energetic and cooperative, those who are available for Him to use in a mighty way. [29:11]
Romans 12:1-2 (ESV)
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Reflection: What "bait" did Jesus use to capture your attention and draw you into a relationship with Him? How might you more fully surrender to the awe-inspiring will of God in an area where you've been holding back?
Discipleship also requires being cleaned. Just as a fish must be pulled from its environment to be cleaned, we too must be willing to step out of familiar surroundings and habits that hinder our transformation. Many desire change and betterment but are unwilling to leave the comfortable environments that keep them from growing. This transition to unfamiliar, uncharted territories can feel like a fight, but it is essential for God to get certain things out of us and make us new. We must choose this day whom we will serve, fully committing to the environment that fosters our spiritual cleansing and growth. [36:08]
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Reflection: What specific environment or habit in your life might God be inviting you to step away from in order to experience deeper cleansing and transformation? What is one concrete action you can take this week to begin that shift?
Finally, to be a disciple means to be casted out for service. It's not enough to simply get clean and sit; we are called to get involved in ministry and reproduce ourselves. Leadership in the church is a pyramid strategy, not a scheme, focused on training and releasing others to grow and fulfill God's purpose. We are meant to be representatives of Christ, actively caring for, helping, and ministering to others. Once you are clean, it is time to get involved, to reproduce yourself, and to allow God to cast you out into the world to serve His kingdom. [43:33]
Matthew 28:19-20 (ESV)
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
Reflection: Beyond simply attending church, in what specific area of ministry or service do you feel God is calling you to get involved or to reproduce yourself by training others? What is one step you can take to answer that call this week?
Jesus’ heart for the hurting and his call to follow him shape a clear, urgent vision of discipleship. Observing everyday people at work, he chose ordinary, available men—those not prominent in religious circles—to be transformed into a new kind of fisher: people who would go beyond mere belief to live and labor like their Master. Discipleship is described as a process that begins with being captured by Christ’s call, moves through a deliberate cleaning out of old environments and habits, and culminates in being cast out to serve and reproduce the same life in others. Availability matters more than status; God selects people who will cooperate, work, and submit themselves to training.
Transformation requires intentional change of setting and practice. To be cleaned, one must be removed from familiar waters that reinforce old ways; true growth often demands uncomfortable separation from previous environments. Spiritual formation also depends on time, encouragement, and close investment: disciples are nurtured by consistent presence, teaching, and example. Leadership is framed as multiplication—not accumulation—so mature disciples are released to lead, serve, and reproduce. Those called to lead must invest time to train successors, freeing others to carry the mission forward. Ultimately, the call is to move people from passive Christianity to active discipleship—captured in wonder, cleansed by transformation, and cast out in service so that the work continues and expands. The invitation is practical and immediate: accept Christ, join a local body, submit to change, and engage in the work of making disciples who make disciples.
Dear brothers and sisters, please understand this. The definition of one of the meetings of a disciple is defined as a dedicated learner and follower of a teacher or philosophy. Watch this. Going beyond the mere knowledge to actively imitate the master's life, adopt their values, and carry on their way work involving transformation, commitment, and often significant sacrifice, especially in the Christian context where it means following Jesus by living like him and spreading his message.

So please understand this, dear brothers and sisters. Jesus walks up to the disciples and understood they knew how to fish and knew the types of bait to be utilized to catch the fish. Come on. And during those times, watch this, they didn't utilize fishing rods. However, they utilize nets. So keep this in mind when it comes to preaching, teaching, and leading that everything that you are doing, you are usually, doing across generations. Come on. So even though it says that they had nets, watch this. When it comes to disciples, we have rods. Come on. Because a rod allows you to put a specific bait to catch the fish you're desiring to catch. Whoo. Come on.

``We go to church, but we ain't captured. We shout, but we ain't captured. We praise, we ain't captured. Come on. Because we sit there and say, it doesn't take all that. Come on. There might be, and I might be preaching to the choir a little bit, but there are some individuals, they're brothers and sisters, when it comes to church, they sit there and say, it doesn't take all that. Well, it doesn't take all that for a Christian, but when it becomes a disciple, it takes all that and then some. You have to give more of an effort when you're trying to be a disciple versus a Christian.

It requires more. Dear brothers and sisters, when you are a disciple versus a Christian, don't be offended when people call themselves a Christian because a lot of people are Christian. They are Christ like. They wanna be saved and just go to heaven. But a disciple wants to be a representative of Christ wherever they want to go. And you have to ask understand it, brothers and sisters, is that there's a specific bait. That means he's captured you.

What did Jesus use to capture you? What did Jesus use to capture you? Because there was something utilized to get your attention. Come on. He used a rod to capture the disciples. He used the rod to capture the scribes. He used a rod to capture rod to capture the sinners. Come on. And this is important because he used stuff to capture you. Come on.

And we have to understand, dear brothers and sisters, that some people, he just asked, and other people, he had to bless them in order to get them to do something. Come on. And we have to understand, dear brothers and sisters, when it comes to true leadership and true discipleship, it's about understanding what I can give more than what I can get. Come on. So what were disciples doing when he told them to come? Let's keep going. What were disciples doing when he told them to come? They were already working. They were already working. And dear brothers and sisters, when he captures you, watch this, the best people to utilize as bait is the people who are already doing something. Why? Because they don't mind working. Come on.

Please understand it, brothers and sisters. In order for you to achieve the dreams that God has for you, you must be willing to be captured. In order for other dis other disciples to help you, they must be willing to be captured. In other words, it's about having people who can work well together because you all are captured and unified working to the same goal. Come on. This is important because God does not choose the lazy and inactive, but the energetic and the cooperative. Come on.

Which says, oh, maybe, watch this, before Jesus taught the fishermen how to be fishers of men, maybe he was already doing it before he brought them along. Pause for the calls. Was Jesus already, making me think now, a fisher of men before he taught other folks how to be fisher of men. That means he had to put it in the work before he could tell other folks to put in the work. Dear brothers and sisters, and in order to properly clean others, you have to be cleaned as well.
