Discernment and Faithfulness Amidst False Teachings
Devotional
Day 1: Discernment in Doctrine
In a world where false teachings can subtly infiltrate the church, it is crucial to develop discernment. Not every doctrinal disagreement is a destructive heresy, but those that deny core truths about Christ and His teachings are dangerous. The Word of God should be our guide, requiring us to be diligent in our study and understanding. Like the Bereans, who searched the Scriptures to verify the truth of what they were taught, we must rely on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to guide us in truth. This vigilance will help us identify and resist teachings that could lead us astray. [03:26]
Acts 17:11 (ESV): "Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so."
Reflection: Think of a recent teaching or belief you encountered. How can you examine it against Scripture to discern its truthfulness today?
Day 2: The Certainty of Judgment
God's past judgments serve as a reminder that He will judge false teachers and those who follow them. This should not cause us to panic but to remain steadfast in our faith, knowing that God will ultimately set things right. Peter reminds us of God's past judgments, such as those on the angels who sinned, the ancient world during Noah's time, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. These serve as warnings that God's judgment is certain and will come upon those who reject His truth. Our confidence lies in God's justice and His promise to uphold truth and righteousness. [14:54]
2 Peter 2:4-6 (ESV): "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly."
Reflection: Reflect on an area where you might be tempted to compromise your faith. How can you remain steadfast, trusting in God's ultimate justice?
Day 3: Living in Anticipation
Our lives should reflect our anticipation of Christ's return. This means living in holiness and godliness, looking forward to the new heavens and new earth. Our conduct can hasten the coming of the Lord, encouraging us to live righteously and share the gospel. Despite the presence of false teachers, we are encouraged to live godly lives, looking forward to the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells. Our conduct should reflect our anticipation of Christ's return, and we should strive to hasten His coming through holy living and evangelism. [41:16]
2 Peter 3:11-13 (ESV): "Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells."
Reflection: What is one specific way you can live in anticipation of Christ's return today, through your actions or words?
Day 4: God's Patience and Purpose
God's apparent delay in judgment is due to His patience, desiring that none should perish but that all should come to repentance. This should inspire us to share the gospel and live in a way that reflects God's heart for the lost. Understanding God's patience helps us to align our lives with His purpose, sharing His love and truth with those around us. We are called to be patient and persistent in our witness, knowing that God's timing is perfect and His desire is for all to come to repentance. [37:20]
2 Peter 3:9 (ESV): "The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance."
Reflection: Who in your life needs to hear about God's patience and love? How can you share this message with them today?
Day 5: Growing in Grace and Knowledge
To remain steadfast in the face of false teachings, we must continually grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. This involves deepening our relationship with Him and understanding His truth, which will keep us grounded and faithful. Peter concludes by urging us to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which will keep us steadfast in the truth. This growth is essential for maintaining our faith and resisting the subtle influences of false teachings. [47:37]
2 Peter 3:18 (ESV): "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen."
Reflection: What is one practical step you can take today to grow in your knowledge and understanding of Jesus? How can this deepen your relationship with Him?
Sermon Summary
In our study of 2 Peter chapters 2 and 3, we delve into the theme of faithful living amid the presence of false teachers. Peter warns us about the reality of false prophets and teachers who secretly introduce destructive heresies. These individuals may appear to be part of the faith community, yet they deny the Lord and bring upon themselves swift destruction. The challenge for us is to discern truth from falsehood, as these false teachings can be subtle and destructive. We must be vigilant, relying on the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to guide us in truth.
Peter emphasizes the importance of understanding the difference between minor doctrinal disagreements and destructive heresies. While some teachings may be incorrect but harmless, others, like denying the divinity of Christ or dismissing the importance of moral conduct, are truly destructive. We are called to be like the Bereans, who searched the Scriptures to verify the truth of what they were taught.
The passage also highlights the judgment that awaits false teachers and those who follow them. Peter reminds us of God's past judgments, such as those on the angels who sinned, the ancient world during Noah's time, and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. These serve as warnings that God's judgment is certain and will come upon those who reject His truth.
Despite the presence of false teachers, we are encouraged to live godly lives, looking forward to the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells. Our conduct should reflect our anticipation of Christ's return, and we should strive to hasten His coming through holy living and evangelism. Peter concludes by urging us to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which will keep us steadfast in the truth.

Sermon Clips
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. [00:01:18]
I'm just here to tell you, I haven't seen it yet in more than 40 Years of doing Christian Ministry. I've never seen it yet where somebody wears a name tag that says false teacher, false prophet. Nobody announces themselves that way. It's up to us to have the discernment to be able to tell whether or not somebody is Faithfully teaching from the word of God or not. [00:03:26]
To teach that Jesus Christ is not God, that's a destructive heresy. To teach that Jesus Christ was not truly man, that's a destructive heresy. To teach that God doesn't care about our sexual conduct, heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, God doesn't care about any of that just as long as we love, that's a destructive heresy. [00:05:38]
Friends, not everybody who stands up in front of an audience and opens a Bible and talks, even if they happen to read from the Bible, is teaching biblical truth. It's just not that way. Peter tells us, Paul tells us, we need to be aware of this, but we don't need to panic. [00:07:56]
For if God did not spare the Angels who sinned but cast them down to Hell and delivered them into chains of Darkness to be reserved for judgment and did not spare the ancient world but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly. [00:12:47]
There is a difference between ignorance of correct Doctrine and rejection of correct Doctrine. Friends, we need to be careful that we don't ever want to apply that being right with God, that going to heaven, is a matter of getting all the answers correct on a theology test. [00:17:57]
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness, but he's long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. Do you know why God didn't return in 1976 or 1977 when I was a very young believer and so excited about the return of Jesus? [00:37:20]
Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God because of which the heavens will be dissolved being on fire and the elements will melt with fervent heat. [00:41:16]
Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and forever. You want to keep yourself on Solid Ground? You just keep growing in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. [00:47:37]
But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. [00:01:18]
