Discerning God's Doors: Choices for Abundant Life

Summary

Every day, we encounter countless doors—choices, opportunities, and challenges that shape our lives. Some doors are easy to recognize as good or bad, but many require discernment to know whether they are truly from God. Jesus is the only true door to abundant life, and the enemy often tries to distract us with doors that look appealing but ultimately lead to disappointment or destruction. It’s not enough to simply follow what looks good or feels right; we must seek God’s guidance in every decision, big or small.

Discernment is the key that helps us distinguish between a door that leads to our destiny and one that leads to a detour. The story of Lot choosing the well-watered plains near Sodom reminds us that not every attractive opportunity is a God opportunity. Lot chose based on what he saw, not on God’s direction, and it led him into trouble. In contrast, God calls us to trust Him with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. When we surrender our plans and seek His wisdom, He promises to make our paths straight.

God’s wisdom is available to all who ask. Even faithful people like King Asa and Joshua made mistakes when they failed to seek God’s counsel first. Whether it’s a job offer, a relationship, or a daily decision, God wants to walk with us through every door. His Word is the standard by which we test every opportunity. If a door requires us to compromise our integrity or pulls us away from God’s presence, it’s not from Him.

Ultimately, the most important door is Jesus Himself. Eternal life begins not when we die, but when we come to know Him personally and surrender our lives to His lordship. No matter what doors you’ve opened in the past—whether they’ve led to pain, regret, or bondage—God’s grace and mercy are available. He invites us to turn from our own ways and walk with Him, trusting that He will lead us into freedom, healing, and purpose.

Key Takeaways

- Not every open door is from God. Some opportunities may look promising on the surface but can lead us away from God’s best. Like Lot, we risk spiritual compromise when we choose based on appearance or comfort rather than seeking God’s direction. True discernment requires us to pause and ask God before stepping through any door. [01:02:59]

- Discernment is the difference between destiny and detour. God is patient, but our choices can delay or derail His plans for us, as seen with the Israelites wandering for forty years. Surrendering our understanding and seeking God’s wisdom in every decision ensures we stay on the path He has prepared. Even mature believers must continually ask for God’s guidance, recognizing our own limitations. [01:10:29]

- God’s wisdom is freely given to those who ask. We are not meant to rely solely on our intellect, emotions, or the advice of others, but to seek God’s counsel first. Even well-meaning people can mislead us if they are not seeking God themselves. A surrendered heart that asks, listens, and obeys is the foundation of a life led by the Spirit. [01:16:56]

- Every door must be tested by God’s Word and character. If an opportunity requires us to compromise our integrity, neglect our relationship with God, or contradicts Scripture, it is not a God door. The Word of God is our lamp and guide, and true friends will help us stay accountable to it. Before stepping through any door, we must shine the light of Scripture on it and seek God’s peace. [01:25:18]

- Jesus is the ultimate door, and knowing Him is the beginning of true life. Eternal life is not just a future promise but a present reality for those who surrender to Christ. No matter what mistakes or wrong doors we’ve chosen in the past, God’s grace is sufficient to forgive, restore, and lead us forward. He invites us to turn from our own ways and walk with Him into freedom and purpose. [01:31:01]

### Bible Reading

John 10:9-10 (ESV)
> "I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

Genesis 13:10-13 (ESV)
> "And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley, and Lot journeyed east. Thus they separated from each other. Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
> "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

Devotional

Day 1: Not Every Open Door Is a God Door
Sometimes what looks like a great opportunity can actually lead us away from God’s best for our lives. Lot chose the well-watered Jordan Valley because it looked appealing, but it brought him dangerously close to Sodom and led to heartbreak and loss. We must be careful not to make decisions based only on what we see or feel, but instead seek God’s wisdom and guidance before stepping through any door. Appearances can be deceiving, and only God knows what’s truly good for us. [01:02:59]

Genesis 13:10-13 (ESV)
And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord.

Reflection: Think of a recent decision you made based on what seemed best in your own eyes—did you seek God’s counsel first, or just go with what looked good?

Day 2: Discernment Is the Door Between Destiny and Detour
God desires to guide us, but we must trust Him and not lean on our own understanding. True discernment comes from surrendering our plans and emotions to the Lord, seeking His wisdom in every situation, and being willing to wait for His direction. When we ask God for wisdom, He promises to give it generously, helping us avoid detours and stay on the path He has prepared for us. [01:10:29]

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you need to stop relying on your own understanding and intentionally ask God for His wisdom today?

Day 3: The Right Door Will Always Align with God’s Word and Character
No matter how attractive an opportunity may seem, if it doesn’t line up with God’s Word and His character, it’s not from Him. The desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life can easily lead us astray, but God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Before stepping through any door, we must shine the light of Scripture on it and be willing to let God’s truth correct and guide us, even if it means turning down something that looks good on the surface. [01:25:18]

1 John 2:16-17 (ESV)
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

Reflection: Is there an opportunity or relationship in your life right now that you need to examine in the light of God’s Word—does it truly align with His character and commands?

Day 4: Seek God First in Every Decision, Big or Small
God wants to be involved in every detail of your life, from the biggest crossroads to the smallest daily choices. He is always speaking, always ready to guide, but we often get too busy or distracted to listen. Even in the little things, like which way to turn or what to say to a loved one, God’s wisdom is available if we will pause and ask. Cultivating a habit of seeking Him first keeps us close to His heart and protects us from unnecessary pain. [01:16:56]

James 1:5 (ESV)
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Reflection: What is one small decision you will bring to God in prayer today, inviting Him to speak and guide you before you act?

Day 5: Eternal Life Begins with Knowing Jesus
The most important door you can ever walk through is the one that leads to Jesus. Eternal life isn’t just about a future in heaven—it’s about knowing God personally, right now. Surrendering your life to Christ means turning from your own ways and letting Him be Lord and Savior. When you do, He comes to live inside you, bringing forgiveness, freedom, and a new beginning. No matter your past, His grace is enough, and He will finish the good work He started in you. [01:31:01]

John 17:3 (ESV)
And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Reflection: Can you point to a moment in your life when you truly surrendered to Jesus and began to know Him personally? If not, what is holding you back from opening that door today?

Quotes

What we feel, especially apart from God, can be misleading. What feels right, popular, or easy may lead us to spiritual compromise. Just because a door is wide and well lit doesn't mean it leads to life. [01:03:46] (16 seconds)  #FeelingsCanMislead Edit Clip Translate Clip

Even mature believers must guard against choosing comfort over calling. The same way with Lot—he made a bad decision. He didn't seek God on it. He didn't go and talk to Abraham about it. He just went and did it. [01:04:14] (18 seconds)  #ComfortVsCalling Edit Clip Translate Clip

Discernment is the door between destiny and detour. God don't want us to be detoured, but he's patient enough. Think about the children of Israel when they came out of Egypt. Literally, it should have took them about 14 days to walk to the promised land, but because of the choices they made along the way, it took them 40 years. A whole generation died off. God is patient. He's got all the time in the world. [01:05:58] (34 seconds)  #DiscernmentBetweenDestinyAndDetour Edit Clip Translate Clip

So true discernment begins with surrender. Trusting God means not relying on our own limited view, emotions, and reasoning. If we seek him before making decisions, he will not just guide us, but he will clear the path. [01:06:46] (15 seconds)  #SurrenderForTrueDiscernment Edit Clip Translate Clip

God's the only one who's perfect. He never made a mistake. And he has great plans for your life. He has life for you, abundant life that he wants to pour out upon you. And that same discernment he wants to give you. [01:07:34] (17 seconds)  #GodsPerfectPlans Edit Clip Translate Clip

Young people, college-aged people, go after God 100%. Have the attitude in your life saying, God, I will go you, it's just me and you, I don't care. I'm not seeking for a spouse. I know that you're so good that you can bring a person into my life when it's time, but in this season, I'm going to go after you 100% of my heart. Eternity is not out there somewhere in heaven. Eternity is right here, right now. You can have eternal life today. You don't have to wait to get to heaven because God will come live on the inside of you. [01:31:48] (17 seconds) Edit Clip Translate Clip
