Discerning God's Plans for You

God’s will is not a hidden puzzle meant to keep people anxious. Mark 9 shows that God has plans, but discerning those plans requires trust and humility. Jesus tells the disciples that He will be delivered over, killed, and raised after three days, yet they do not understand what He is saying. God’s definite plan is at work in the cross, but the disciples cannot see the whole thing until the resurrection makes it clear.

God does not give the whole map. He gives the next step. Abraham leaves what is comfortable without being told every detail about where he is going, when he will arrive, or how everything will work out. The flashlight image makes the point plain: it does not light up the whole trail to the pond, but it gives enough light for the next step, then the next step, then the next step. Faith means moving forward with the light God gives instead of demanding the three year, five year, and ten year plan.

Jesus also shows that God is not just trying to get somebody somewhere. God is trying to make somebody into someone. While Jesus is headed toward the cross, the disciples are arguing about who is greatest. Jesus turns their whole idea of greatness upside down: “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.” God’s will is not mainly about landing the perfect job, marrying the one perfect person, or moving to the perfect city. God’s will is deeply concerned with whether a servant shows up wherever a person wakes up.

God’s moral will gives a clear framework through His Word. A believer should not marry an unbeliever, because Scripture speaks plainly there. Yet within the boundaries of obedience, God gives real freedom and real agency. The question is not merely which option gets chosen, but what kind of man or woman makes that choice and lives faithfully inside it.

Jesus places a child among the disciples to show that kingdom living is marked by dependence. Humility sees the difference between the ideal self that gets projected and the real self that still needs mercy. Humility also admits weakness. God may allow circumstances that are bigger than a person can handle because those circumstances drive that person to depend on what God can handle. God’s will becomes wonderfully simple: trust Him, depend on Him, love the person in front of you, serve the person beside you, and do the next right thing.
