David’s life begins with a promise that looks almost too good to be true. God sends Samuel to Jesse’s house, calls the young shepherd in from the field, and anoints him as Israel’s next king. David has promise, potential, and the Spirit of the Lord upon him, yet he does not sit on the throne until about fifteen years later. The delay becomes filled with caves, danger, rejection, and one disappointment after another.
David’s path to the throne runs through Saul’s hatred, his brothers’ lack of support, the loss of Jonathan, the taking of his wife, and years of living like a hunted man. The promise of a crown does not keep him from sleeping on rocks or hiding in the wilderness. The tension between God’s promise and David’s circumstances raises the question that disappointment always raises: Is God really going to do what He said He would do?
Psalm 57 gives David’s answer from inside the cave. David does not pretend the calamity is small. He asks God for mercy, says that his soul trusts in God, and makes his refuge in the shadow of God’s wings until the calamities be passed. God is not taken by surprise when disappointment comes. God knows the beginning and the end, and God can use even a long delay to prepare a person for something greater.
Disappointment becomes dangerous when it turns into venting, quitting, anger, isolation, depression, or bitterness. The devil uses painful circumstances to whisper that nothing is going right, nothing will change, and nothing good will ever come. That kind of thinking clouds judgment and often produces more bad decisions. Disappointment may be self-inflicted, or it may come from something completely outside a person’s control, but it must not be allowed to control the person.
The truth is simple: this too will pass. Life goes on, and God’s people must go on with it. Psalm 23 shows that David kept his eyes on the Lord in a dark valley rather than blaming God for the valley. God uses hard places to build strength, deepen faith, and shape character. A person who comes through deep disappointment with grace, hope, and a continued desire to serve God becomes an encouragement to everybody watching.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s promises can include long delays God anointed David long before David wore the crown. The years in between were not evidence that God had forgotten, but part of God’s preparation for the responsibility ahead. A delayed promise can still be a certain promise when God is the One who made it. [06:22]
- 2. Calamity needs God’s personal refuge David did not deny the calamity or minimize the pain of it. He took his soul to God and hid in the shadow of God’s wings until the trouble passed. Disappointment becomes bearable when God is not merely an idea, but the place of refuge. [14:11]
- 3. Disappointment can become a spiritual landmine Disappointment can push a person toward anger, quitting, isolation, and bad decisions. Satan loves to use one painful event to create the lie that nothing will ever change. God’s people must recognize that lie before it settles into bitterness. [27:25]
- 4. This too will pass Life brings disappointments to everybody, sometimes through no fault of their own. God remains aware of every circumstance, even when the road feels confusing and unfair. The pain is real, but the pain does not get the final word. [31:58]
- 5. Faithful endurance strengthens those watching David’s trials did not cancel God’s purpose for his life. A person who endures hardship with grace can give courage to others facing their own dark valleys. God can turn a believer’s wounds into a testimony of His sustaining strength.
