A Different Priority

Jesus’ words in Matthew 6 put two kingdoms and two value systems side by side. Jesus has already shown what kingdom citizens look like: poor in spirit, mournful over sin, meek, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and willing to be persecuted because they belong to him. Kingdom citizens are salt and light, people meant to influence families, workplaces, and the culture around them. The law finds its true meaning and fulfillment in Christ, and acts of righteousness like giving, praying, and fasting belong before the Father who sees in secret, not before people handing out attaboys.

Matthew 6 then turns to stuff, money, possessions, and the search for security. America’s bigger houses, bigger closets, bigger garages, and booming storage units show that plenty of room still does not make the heart feel safe. The old story says, “just a little bit more” will finally bring peace, but Jesus exposes that chase as unable to give what the soul actually needs.

Jesus names four witnesses: treasure, eyes, master, and worries. Earthly treasure is vulnerable. Clothing can be eaten by moths, grain can rot, coins can be stolen, and modern life can lose everything through fire, disaster, government decisions, or one bad day. Heavenly treasure is different because it cannot be corrupted or stolen. Treasure reveals the heart because the heart follows whatever it truly values.

The eye reveals perspective. In Jesus’ world, a good eye meant generosity, and an evil eye meant greed. A healthy eye sees the Father as good, generous, and able to provide, so the whole life fills with light. A bad eye gets tight fisted because it does not really trust that God has a person’s back.

The master reveals allegiance. Money is a great resource and a great tool, but it is a terrible master. God and mammon cannot both own the same life because one will always pull against the other.

Worry reveals trust or the lack of it. The birds do not build barns, yet the Father feeds them. The lilies do not sew outfits, yet Solomon was not dressed like them. The Father already knows every need, so Jesus calls kingdom citizens to seek first God’s kingdom, live rightly according to his word, and trust him with the rest. A different priority leads to a different peace.
