The Lay of the Land | Deuteronomy 29 : 29

Deuteronomy 29:29 does not look big at first glance. The verse feels almost like a truism, like water is wet or fire is hot, but it gives God’s people the lay of the land. The Big Bend map at Panther Junction helps make sense of the point: a person does not need every nook and cranny in order to move forward, but a person does need enough truth to stay on the right road.

Moses places Israel on the edge of the promised land with a lot of unanswered questions hanging in the air. God has delivered them from Egypt, sustained them in the wilderness, and promised blessing in Canaan. Moses also warns them that rebellion will bring judgment, death, and exile. The tension is real: how will God judge his people and still keep his ancient promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?

The secret things belong to the Lord. Moses does not answer every question Israel might have had about the future. The verse teaches that some things are simply outside human grasp. God knows, and that has to be enough. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil shows the same pattern from the beginning: Adam and Eve were called to trust God instead of grabbing at knowledge that did not belong to them. Job shows it again, because God never answers Job’s “why” questions. God gives Job himself, his presence, his greatness, his wisdom. Paul shows it too in Romans 11, where mystery leads not to speculation but worship: God’s judgments are unsearchable and his ways are inscrutable.

The revealed things also belong to God’s people. God has not left his people in the dark. His revealed word is an inheritance, a treasured possession, a gift to be appreciated, stewarded, and lived by. Israel had enough truth to obey, even without exhaustive knowledge. God had spoken through Moses, acted in the exodus, led by cloud and fire, fed by manna, and later kept speaking through prophets and Scripture.

Christ is the great revealed thing, better said, the great revealed person. Hebrews says God has spoken by his Son, the radiance of his glory and the exact imprint of his nature. Colossians says the mystery hidden for ages has now been revealed: Christ in his people, the hope of glory. The lay of the land has a cross and an empty tomb right in the middle of it. In a life full of unknowns, God’s people keep going back to the great known whose name is Jesus.
