Delight in the Lord: Jesus, Alpha and Omega

Psalm 37 starts with the promise that delight in the Lord changes the desires of the heart. God uproots desires that are impure and unhealthy, plants desires that line up with his good, and gives good gifts in his timing instead of according to anybody’s agenda. Delight begins with knowing that God is good.

Revelation pulls back the curtain on what is true when headlines, chaos, threats, and anxiety feel overwhelming. John writes to small, vulnerable churches living under the weight of Rome, where Christians had little power and every reason to feel angry, helpless, sad, anxious, or stuck stewing. Apocalypse does not mainly mean catastrophe. Apocalypse means revelation: God makes known what is really real. Jesus is Lord, no matter what the headlines say.

John names the Father as the one “who is and who was and who is to come.” Rome was not always, and Rome would not last forever. Empires and tyrants rise and fall, but the Father remains. John also gives Jesus three titles that reframe the whole world: faithful witness, firstborn from the dead, and ruler of the kings of the earth. Jesus reveals the character of God, his resurrection guarantees that more resurrection is coming, and his authority outranks every king, president, empire, and corrupt official.

Jesus frees people from sin by his blood, but freedom is not merely freedom from something. Jesus frees his people for a kingdom and for priesthood. The kingdom names lives ordered under the gracious reign of the King, where shalom begins to grow. Priests pray for neighbors, coworkers, family members, and even the idiot who cuts somebody off in traffic. Priests also run into the mess, showing up with prayer, presence, cookies, repairs, witness, and hope.

Revelation declares that every eye will see the Son of Man coming with the clouds. Jesus brings justice, not mere revenge, against the bullies and powers that exploit and destroy. Worship becomes the first response to evil because worship anchors the heart in the King whose dominion never ends. Worship does not remove faithful action, hard conversations, calls to the police, or necessary conflict. Worship simply comes first, before fighting, stewing, anxiety, grief, or helplessness gets to rule.

The Alpha and Omega holds the whole film strip of history in his hands. The future is not anybody’s to fear or control, because God holds its best version. The past is not anybody’s to regret, rehearse, or use as a glory-days identity, because God can redeem it and build good from it. The present is a gift to receive with gratitude and steward as a kingdom and priest. Jesus stepped into the timeline with nail-scarred hands, and he walks with his people through their few frames into eternity.
