Psalm 37 begins with a question about readiness: is the heart ready for what God wants to do? God is a God who wants to bless, provide, and pour out, but an untransformed heart can mishandle an open door, financial freedom, or the very thing it has been asking for. The desire for everything to happen by tomorrow morning sounds good, but not everything wanted is actually good. God gives what is needed, because receiving everything wanted without a changed heart can build an attitude that no longer needs God.
David places delight before desire: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Delight means finding joy, peace, satisfaction, and deep enjoyment in the Lord Himself. The heart that says, “Give me this and then I will be happy,” has attached peace to a gift instead of the Giver. God does not merely want to give the heart what it desires. God wants the heart long enough to teach it what to desire.
Psalm 37 also confronts comparison. Evil people may seem to have the houses, cars, money, and clean-looking success, but grass withers and green plants fade. Comparison makes the heart desire what somebody else has, while delight teaches the heart to treasure what God is doing. God is not IKEA, handing over pieces and telling people to put their own lives together. God works on the person and on what He is preparing to give, according to His will.
Philippians 2:13 shows that God works in people, not merely around them. God changes circumstances, but God first changes the heart so that it can carry what He gives. Changed people develop changed desires. The desire to prove oneself becomes the desire to please Him. The desire for everybody to know a name becomes the desire for people to know His name. The desire to win every argument becomes the desire to protect relationships.
Jesus connects asking with abiding in John 15. Remaining comes first, asking comes second. Abiding changes what the heart asks for because God’s words, motives, and desires begin to live within it. Some desires do not need fulfillment. Some need healing, surrender, crucifixion, patience, or courage. The greater gift is not simply getting the desires of the heart, but becoming the kind of person who wants what pleases the Father.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Delight comes before desire [01:13:19] Psalm 37 does not give a formula for getting whatever the heart wants. Delight puts God first, before the request, before the door, before the outcome. The heart learns that joy is not found in what God gives but in who God is. As delight grows, desire begins to change. [73:19]
- 2. Comparison corrupts the heart’s cravings [01:07:00] Comparison causes the heart to look sideways and start wanting somebody else’s life. God may have designed what another person carries for them, not for someone else. Delight turns attention back toward God’s work in the present life. Gratitude begins to see what envy cannot see. [67:00]
- 3. God changes people from within [01:20:18] God does not only change the circumstance while leaving the heart untouched. God works within, transforming motives, expectations, and capacity to steward blessing. The greatest miracle is often not what God puts in someone’s hands, but what God forms in someone’s heart. A transformed heart can carry what an unchanged heart would misuse. [80:18]
- 4. Some desires need healing, not fulfillment [01:28:39] Desire can be fathered by rejection, insecurity, fear, pride, wounds, culture, or lust. God invites the heart to ask where a longing came from before asking for it to be fulfilled. Some longings need to be brought to the cross rather than chased. Healing can expose that what looked like ambition was actually pain asking to be seen. [88:39]
- 5. Abide first, ask second [01:31:39] Jesus places remaining in Him before asking whatever the heart wishes. Abiding allows God’s words to shape intentions until the request is no longer separated from His will. The palace of King Jesus reveals that His presence is not a stop on the way to getting something else. The closer the heart gets to the Father, the more His desires become its desires.
