Day 1: God Is Light, No Darkness

Jesus told his disciples a message. He declared that God is light. In God there is no darkness at all. This is the core truth John heard from Jesus and passed on. It is a foundational promise about God's character.

This means God is completely good, pure, and holy. He is set apart from all the evil, corruption, and confusion of our world. There is no shadow of turning in him. His nature is only light, and this light is the source of all life. We were made for this pure light.

Many of us feel the pain of the world's darkness. We also contribute to it. We sometimes prefer to hide our mistakes in shadow rather than bring them into the light. But God invites you into his radiant, life-giving presence. Where have you been trying to hide something in the dark?

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
(1 John 1:5, NIV)

Prayer: Thank God that he is pure light and that in him there is no darkness or shadow.

Challenge: Identify one area of your life you have been keeping in the dark and write it down on a piece of paper.

Day 2: The Light Shines in Darkness

John wrote that in Jesus was life, and that life was the light of all people. This light shone into the world's darkness. The darkness tried to overcome it, but it could not. The light had a resurrection resilience that evil could not extinguish. Jesus is this unconquerable light.

Jesus did not merely point to the light. He is the light. He is the life of God poured out for all people. He is the true light that gives light to everyone. His light exposes what is hidden and guides the lost. He came so that no one who believes in him should stay in darkness.

You may feel lost or disoriented. Life's twists and turns can happen in the dark, leaving you stumbling. But Jesus promises that whoever follows him will never walk in darkness. They will have the light of life. Will you believe his promise and take one step toward his light today?

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Day 3: Loving Darkness Instead of Light

John reveals a painful truth. The light came into the world, but people loved darkness instead. They loved it because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light. They will not come into the light because they fear their deeds will be exposed. Darkness allows us to coddle our sin.

We often believe the lie that we will be happier in the dark. We think darkness offers satisfaction and freedom. But darkness is not our friend. It is built on lies and deception. It is the enemy of everything good, right, and life-giving. Temptation is always the lie that you’d be happier away from God’s light.

You might be dancing with a temptation right now. It masquerades as something wide open and fun. But sin is thin. It cannot fulfill you. Temptation leads to devastation. What lie are you believing about the darkness you are flirting with?

This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

Prayer: Confess to God any area where you have loved darkness more than his light.

Challenge: Name the specific lie a temptation is selling you and speak the truth aloud: "Sin is thin."

Day 4: Walk in the Light as He Is

John gives a clear command. If we claim to have fellowship with God yet walk in darkness, we lie. We are not living out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as God is in the light, two things happen. We have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin.

Walking in the light means practicing it. We align our lives to access more of God's light. We allow it to fill us and flow through us. This practice makes us more like the light. As we draw near to God's purity, we also become more aware of our own sin. This is not to condemn us, but to cleanse us.

You cultivate a love for the light by practicing it. This means bringing your whole self into God's presence, especially your failures. You bring your sin into the light so Jesus's blood can purify you. What sin do you need to stop excusing and simply confess today?

If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Day 5: Confess and Be Purified

John states that if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves. The truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just. He will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. We must quit justifying, minimizing, and rationalizing our wrongs.

Confession is the pathway to forgiveness and deep cleansing. It is the opposite of hiding. It is bringing our specific failures into the light of God's grace. We confess the sins we remember and the sins we have forgotten. We confess what we have done and what we have left undone.

This is how we walk in the light. We agree with God about our sin. We trust his promise to be faithful. We receive his justice that pardons us because of Jesus. His forgiveness is complete and all the way down. What specific failure can you confess to God right now, trusting he is faithful to forgive?

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
