Defining True Christianity: Relationship, Belief, Love, Joy

Summary

In today's reflection, we delve into the essence of what it truly means to be a Christian, as outlined in 1 Peter 1:8. This verse provides a profound definition of a Christian, emphasizing the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In a world filled with confusion about the Christian identity, it is crucial to return to the foundational truths of our faith. Many people today have misconceptions about what makes someone a Christian, often associating it with cultural or moral standards. However, the core of Christianity is not about external actions or beliefs but about our relationship with Christ.

Peter's words were addressed to ordinary Christians, not to apostles or church leaders, highlighting that this relationship with Christ is the norm for all believers. The Christian life is characterized by three primary aspects: belief in Christ, love for Him, and rejoicing in Him. Belief in Christ goes beyond acknowledging His existence or teachings; it involves trusting Him entirely for our salvation. This belief is not merely intellectual but deeply personal, recognizing that Christ alone can save us from our sins.

Furthermore, a true Christian loves Christ, even though we have not seen Him. This love is not just an emotional response but is demonstrated through our actions and obedience to His commandments. Love for Christ compels us to spend time with Him, to please Him, and to live according to His will. It is a love that is selfless and sacrificial, much like the love a mother has for her child.

Lastly, Christians are called to rejoice in Christ with a joy that is unspeakable and full of glory. This joy is not dependent on our circumstances but is rooted in the glory of Christ and what He has done for us. It is a joy that transcends human understanding and is a testament to the transformative power of a relationship with Jesus.

Day 1: Relationship with Christ as the Core of Faith
True Christianity is defined by a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, not by cultural identity or moral behavior. This relationship is foundational to the Christian faith and distinguishes believers from mere theists. It is essential to understand that being a Christian is not about adhering to a set of rules or fitting into a cultural mold but about knowing and loving Jesus personally. This relationship is the essence of our faith and the source of our identity as Christians. [06:58]

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:4-5, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways can you deepen your personal relationship with Jesus today, beyond cultural or moral expectations?

Day 2: Trusting Christ Completely for Salvation
Belief in Christ means trusting Him entirely for our salvation, not just acknowledging His teachings or moral example. This belief involves casting all our burdens on Him and relying on His finished work on the cross. It is a trust that goes beyond intellectual assent and becomes a personal reliance on Jesus as the only one who can save us from our sins. This trust is the foundation of our faith and the assurance of our salvation. [16:19]

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9, ESV)

Reflection: What burdens are you holding onto that you need to cast onto Jesus today, trusting Him completely for your salvation?

Day 3: Demonstrating Love for Christ Through Obedience
Our love for Jesus is shown not just in words but in our actions and obedience to His commandments. True love for Christ compels us to live in a way that pleases Him and aligns with His will. This love is not merely an emotional response but is demonstrated through our daily choices and actions. It is a love that is selfless and sacrificial, much like the love a mother has for her child. [23:26]

"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever." (John 14:15-16, ESV)

Reflection: What is one specific commandment of Jesus that you can focus on obeying more fully today as an expression of your love for Him?

Day 4: Experiencing Unspeakable Joy in Christ
The joy of a Christian is rooted in the glory of Christ and what He has done for us. It is a profound joy that cannot be fully expressed in words and is a reflection of our deep relationship with Him. This joy is not dependent on our circumstances but is a testament to the transformative power of knowing Jesus. It is a joy that transcends human understanding and fills our hearts with hope and peace. [30:28]

"Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls." (1 Peter 1:8-9, ESV)

Reflection: How can you cultivate a deeper sense of joy in Christ today, regardless of your current circumstances?

Day 5: The Need for a Revived Church
The greatest need of the church today is for believers who truly know and love Christ. A church filled with such individuals will be vibrant and attractive to the world, drawing others to the faith. This revival begins with each believer's personal relationship with Jesus and their commitment to living out their faith authentically. It is through this genuine love and devotion that the church can become a beacon of hope and light in the world. [33:25]

"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." (Hebrews 10:24-25, ESV)

Reflection: What steps can you take to contribute to the revival of your church community by deepening your own relationship with Christ?

Quotes

Now I call attention to this because here in this verse we have one of the many definitions of the Christian that are to be found scattered about in the New Testament in the writings of all the various Apostles and there is nothing it seems to me at the present time that is more important than that we should all be perfectly clear in our minds as to what it rarely means to be a Christian. [00:28:43]

The fundamental thing the basic thing is our relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ, whom having not seen ye love in whom though now ye see him not yet believing ye Rejoice with a joy unspeakable and full of Glory. He's referring to the one to whom he's been speaking that the trial of your faith being much more precious than of gold that perisheth though it be tried with fire might be found un praise and honor and glorying at the appearing of Jesus Christ. [00:06:05]

Christianity is Christ and there is no such thing as being Christian except in terms of our relationship to this blessed person. Without him there is no Christianity at all and man I say may be a believer in God but if he is not in this peculiar relationship to Jesus Christ he is not a Christian. [00:06:47]

The Christian is a man whose whole life and Outlook are centered upon this blessed person and here the Apostle tells us that this relationship of ours to the Lord Jesus Christ takes it in it three main basic primary forms and I want to call your attention to them. [00:07:49]

He believes in and on the Lord Jesus Christ. Now what does that mean? Here is a term again that we often tend to use glibly lightly and Loosely without realizing fully what we mean without realizing its great and tremendous content. What do we mean by saying that we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? [00:08:29]

He doesn't merely believe certain things about him. He doesn't merely believe that Jesus was a great man or a great teacher a great moral example or anything like that not just someone whom he's to try to follow and to emit it that he may save himself that isn't what he believes at all. [00:14:47]

The Apostle goes on to add to that the second thing he tells us that is true about the Christian is that he loves the Lord Jesus Christ whom having not seen ye love. Now this is much more difficult isn't it? I don't think it's very difficult for any man who's ever really seen himself as he truly is. [00:18:29]

Love is something that always expresses itself. Our Lord himself has defined love for us once and forever when he says he that keepeth my Commandments he it is that loveth me. The man who keeps the Commandments you know it's a simple thing for all of us isn't it to sing some of these great hymns. [00:20:29]

The third thing is this in whom though now ye see him not yet believing ye Rejoice with a joy unspeakable and full of Glory. Now this is the highest test of all I would urge upon you again the importance of remembering that the Apostle here was writing about ordinary Christians. [00:23:26]

The joy which the true Christian has in his Lord is the joy of a man who's had some glimpse of the glory he hasn't had a vision of him as or hasn't seen him as the Apostle Paul saw him on the road to Damascus but he does know something about this Glory. [00:29:58]

The greatest need of the church today is to be filled with people like this what we need is not formal religion not formal Christians no no when the church is filled with people like this she'll be on fire she'll be alive and she'll attract the messes of the people as she has done in every period of Revival and of Reawakening. [00:33:25]

We need men and women who know him like this who not only believe in him but who love him and who rejoice in him with a joy unspeakable and full of Glory may God make of us such men and women to the praise of the glory of his grace. [00:39:50]
