Defending the Gospel: Grace Over Law

Summary

### Summary

Today, we delved into the profound truths found in the book of Galatians, focusing on the Apostle Paul's passionate defense of the gospel. Paul was deeply troubled by the Galatians' quick departure from the true gospel to a false one that emphasized the law over grace. He emphasized that the gospel is complete and sufficient on its own, and any addition to it only cheapens the work of Christ. This foundational issue distinguishes Christianity from all other religions, which often require human effort to earn divine favor. In contrast, Christianity teaches that God has done what we are unable to do through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Paul's personal testimony serves as a powerful defense of the gospel. He was once a zealous persecutor of Christians, deeply entrenched in Judaism and its traditions. However, his dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus transformed him into a passionate proclaimer of the gospel. This transformation underscores the power of God's grace and the importance of personal testimony in sharing the gospel.

Paul's story is a reminder that our past, no matter how dark, can be redeemed and used for God's glory. He was transparent about his past, owning his sins and using his story to illustrate the transformative power of God's grace. This transparency is crucial for us as well; our stories of brokenness and redemption can resonate with others and point them to Christ.

We also explored the importance of aligning our beliefs and actions with God's Word. Paul, despite his unique calling, sought unity with the church and respected its established leaders. This unity is essential for the body of Christ to function effectively and to present a consistent witness to the world.

Finally, we reflected on the power of transformation in our own lives. Just as Paul's life was a testament to God's transformative power, our lives should also reflect the change that comes from knowing Christ. This transformation is not just for our benefit but for those around us, as our stories can lead others to the truth of the gospel.

Devotional

Day 1: The Sufficiency of the Gospel
The gospel is complete and sufficient on its own. Adding anything to it only cheapens the work of Christ. This foundational truth distinguishes Christianity from all other religions, which often require human effort to earn divine favor. In Christianity, God has done what we are unable to do through His Son, Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul was deeply troubled by the Galatians' quick departure from the true gospel to a false one that emphasized the law over grace. [15:24]

Galatians 1:6-7 (ESV): "I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ."

Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you are tempted to add to the gospel, relying on your own efforts rather than trusting in the sufficiency of Christ's work? How can you surrender these areas to God today?

Day 2: The Power of Personal Testimony
Paul's transformation from a persecutor to a proclaimer of the gospel underscores the power of personal testimony. Our stories of brokenness and redemption can resonate with others and point them to Christ. Transparency about our past is crucial; it allows others to see the transformative power of God's grace in our lives. Paul was once a zealous persecutor of Christians, deeply entrenched in Judaism and its traditions. However, his dramatic encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus transformed him into a passionate proclaimer of the gospel. This transformation underscores the power of God's grace and the importance of personal testimony in sharing the gospel. [21:03]

1 Timothy 1:15-16 (ESV): "The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life."

Reflection: Reflect on your own story of brokenness and redemption. How can you share your testimony with someone this week to point them to Christ?

Day 3: Aligning with God's Word
It's essential to align our beliefs and actions with God's Word. Paul, despite his unique calling, sought unity with the church and respected its established leaders. This unity is crucial for the body of Christ to function effectively and to present a consistent witness to the world. Paul, despite his unique calling, sought unity with the church and respected its established leaders. This unity is essential for the body of Christ to function effectively and to present a consistent witness to the world. [49:47]

Ephesians 4:3-6 (ESV): "Eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."

Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you struggle to align with God's Word or with the unity of the church? How can you take steps today to seek unity and align your actions with God's Word?

Day 4: The Importance of Transformation
Our lives should reflect the change that comes from knowing Christ. This transformation is not just for our benefit but for those around us. Just as Paul's life was a testament to God's transformative power, our lives should also reflect this change, leading others to the truth of the gospel. [52:04]

2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."

Reflection: How has your life been transformed by knowing Christ? In what ways can you demonstrate this transformation to those around you today?

Day 5: Embracing Our Unique Faith Stories
Each of us has a unique faith story that God is writing. This story is not just for us but for those around us who need to hear it. Embracing and sharing our unique faith stories can lead others to Christ and help them see the reality of God's work in our lives. [45:10]

Psalm 66:16 (ESV): "Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul."

Reflection: What is your unique faith story? How can you share it with someone this week to help them see the reality of God's work in your life?

Quotes

1. "And so Paul comes out very clearly Like, man, there is nothing That you need to add to the gospel The gospel is complete and sufficient All on its own It's by God's mercy and grace That he gives us a peace He gives this gift of peace That has been made by Jesus Christ For you and I That we have this certainty Paul says, like, You've been justified It's by the complete work of God That you have been saved For anything you add to it If you add anything to the gospel All you're doing is cheapening the work of Christ You're cheapening the work of Christ on that cross You're saying, your suffering was a waste Because I need to do something to be saved I have to add some work I have to do something in order for this salvation To take place Or for me to be worthy of forgiveness of sins" [15:24] (47 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

2. "No, this affects the very core foundation Of faith It's what distinguishes Christianity From all other religions Because all religions will say I have to do something in order to earn the favor In order to earn the right To even be with this God To have this God do anything good for me I must do all this other stuff And Paul says, no In the gospel of Christianity What is unique is that God has come to us And God has done what we are unable to do And God has given his favor to us And his grace because of what his son has done It's a gift And whenever we mess it up We are confusing the gospel Which then Eroses in our confidence Like, is God punishing me with a storm? Is God doing this after me Because I'm a horrible person? We create this confusion Uncertainty And what we do is We also, not in just our own lives But we give confusion and uncertainty For those who are looking at Christianity" [16:18] (65 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3. "And so while Galatians might be a very short letter It's a letter that's just full Of important truths of God's grace That are significant for our lives But also for the lives of others And therefore it's worthy for us To know this, to live this And to guard it and protect it For future generations That the gospel does not get lost Does not get mucked up By the church That we are a people That have been saved by grace By Christ crucified And Christ's crucifixion was necessary Because we are sinners Sinners who are unable to save themselves Who are dead to Christ Who have no merit whatsoever in our own The gospel is not what we hear in a church today That I'm a good person Therefore I deserve to be saved And I deserve eternal life Because I was a good person No, Jesus was good was perfect Because Jesus made himself known to me And saved me Therefore I have eternal life Because of him Period, amen" [18:32] (69 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

4. "Your story is crucial It's critical You don't have to know The whole Bible To have a great story They didn't Why would we limit ourselves? And maybe you don't feel like you have a story And I pray as we turn to God's word today It will inspire you It will illuminate It will give you eyes to see your story To know the unique story that God is writing in you So you can tell that story Because what we see in the apostle Paul's story Is a person who was ill-equipped Who is like the most unlikely person you would pick But God picks him And God picks him for you And God uses him In a powerful way in his kingdom And that's true for you and I" [22:20] (54 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5. "And so this is a very, very Important part of Paul's life This is his story This is his testimony In which he defends the gospel In which he defends his authority As apostle Which he used to help others in Christ And so he's not He's not Now he didn't sit there and say Yeah Jesus is wonderful And he just forgave me He owned his past His junk His sin And it's so refreshing Because the church culture It kind of like this Like well you know We know you were a sinner We all know you probably did bad things But you should just keep them quiet And we don't share the past And it's almost like We kind of have this shame about it We try to quiet it We try to erase it And say look I don't want to talk about the past You know that's the past It was bad I did bad things We just kind of Generically say stuff And we act like it's like Man if I would say this People would maybe condemn me People would maybe say this People would maybe look at me differently And I think that That feeling That thinking Is not godly It is Satan God knew you sinned He knows your sin And he says bring it to light He means confess it Not just confess it It's part of who you are And God knows it And God's grace Is greater than any sin And what does God promise to do? He promises to deliver you And redeem you Redeem means Take the past That was broken and messed up And make something good out of it It's part of your story It's part of your story That others need to hear Because you know what The world can relate to your brokenness They can't always relate to your grace And there's people that need to hear your story So they can understand the greater story That's going on" [29:28] (60 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

6. "And so what you see is like I mean, he's just been blinded By his light Acts 9, 8 really goes on About him being blinded again And that he was so blinded That he needed other people To lead him after this I'm pretty sure there's other people Leading him after this To guide him Because he was blind We're probably sitting there saying I hope this took this would be a mean guy Right? But What is amazing is that In this situation I mean, he's a good He's a Pharisee And the Pharisees understand Like you just can't be In the presence of God You have to You're unclean And you have to do All these rituals And ceremonies And sacrifices In order to be In the presence of God Because you have unclean If you come in the presence of God You have a sinner You will die Because he's a holy God Who is righteous And just So the Apostle Paul In fact, he was in the presence Of the holy God there I mean, this is overwhelmingly A statement of grace To him He knows he should be dead Which is the reality of our sin Is it not? Our sin Our consequences Is death But Jesus Took on that consequence That we have life And in that life He gives us a purpose" [37:12] (86 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

7. "And so it's been stretching us We're pouring in other people We've done some of that But now it's like A whole other level And that's led us That we're not going to sit there We have a vision A mission and vision It's too great And that's part of the reasons Why I keep sitting there Going to God There's people that need Jesus They need to hear it And we reach a unique niche Of people That otherwise wouldn't Come to church Right? Today Case in point I'll give you a little trivia Thing here that happened today It's kind of cool But We had our beach service The beach is small and everything So we were On a different angle But One of the greeters Was in the church In the back And this person came And I saw them talking I thought the person Was homeless That's what they kind of Look like From a distance Little did I know It was REO Speedwagon Who happened to walk Down to the beach And they Joined us for worship So we had the singer And the guitar player Come join us And stay for worship And left And I think they made Some comment That they want to play The next time they're in town But They're doing a private gig At a house And the house was closed And they just Wandered down the beach And they found church And they stuck around It's pretty cool But what's cool Is there's just There's tons of other people Just like that was a guy Who was just running From Freeport And he came to church At Shongoli With no shirt on And was perfectly Comfortable and fine And I give great credit For that community That just didn't say Hey get a shirt No service You know But you know This is like This is what God's Called us to And For those like To interrupt their lives And their paths And to God to speak to them In that moment In that place In that time That they need And there are each other people That normally wouldn't come To a church building And so that's a unique thing That God is doing here" [41:02] (117 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

8. "And so D Now the power Paul's power The transformer I mean he is the transformer Who's been changed by God Again verse 23 It says They only were hearing it said He used to persecute us Is now preaching the faith He once tried to destroy And they glorify God because of me He went from that persecutor To the proclaimer He was the largest In charge The suffering servant He was blind Now see And so Paul had this evidence Of transformation in his life Yes his sinful life was in public But so was his new life Was in public That all can see and know And so here's my question I want you to This is the one I want you to own And work on In special life groups Like what are the two words Of your transformation? What is it that God has done In transforming you? And maybe you have more than two words And you have a lot of them But scripture does This all the time Right? It says like You are in the darkest and the light Maybe you are prideful Cocky would say And humble Or you are rebellious And to obedience Lost to found Dead to alive A slave to freedom There's all these These two words Of the past and to the present And so what is the transformation That's going on in your life? What do you identify with tells your story? And maybe you had this Incredible encounter with Jesus That was big life shaping Kind of like this Big catalyst to your faith Or maybe it's a transformation That's going over A longer period of time And the ones that are slower And longer Are often often Not always as visible And noticeable But what is that transformation? What is it that God's been doing in your life?" [52:28] (113 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

9. "So how do we respond To the transfer and power of Christ? It's three simple things We first Man we recognize A. The need for transformation I mean we are spiritually Righteous in God's sight Fully completely redeemed But on this side Of this side of eternity We are in process Jeremiah 17 9 says The heart is deceitful Above all things And desperately sick Who could understand it? Right? I mean the heart wants What the heart wants And the heart drives us And emotions drive us We don't make decisions Without emotions But with the heart When it leaves emotions It can deceive us The heart doesn't care About right and wrong It just wants what it wants And if you let the heart lead It can take you down Some terrible roads of darkness And put you in places Of slavery to sin That you never thought you'd be Because the heart wants What it wants So we got to recognize That we need transformation Left our own Our heart will wander And take us in different places We don't want to be It changes all the time Which leads to B What do we do? We repent And turn to God Acts writes Repent therefore Turn back And your sins may be Blotted out Again it's not to say Forgive all your sins But the constant Consequences Are gone God has forgiven him And so then once we repent We receive See is receive And it's a memory verse Let's just read together And I will give you A new heart And a new spirit And I will put within you And I will remove The heart of stone From your flesh And give you A heart of flesh I mean that heart of stone That means a heart That's hard to God A heart that's disobedient A heart that's rebellious A heart that keeps God At a distance And doesn't surrender to him And be a servant And God says man If you turn to me My transformation I will change your heart You know as we say in that psalm Cleanse my heart O Lord Renew a right spirit in me And God is a God of transformation Who does that? He did it in Ezekiel He comes and says Look I'll give you a new heart A heart of flesh In other words A heart that's after me That's soft That senses my presence And knows my grace That will change Its attitudes Its motives Its desires Enable you to love And serve And know me more intimately See God loves you To be a vibrant follower of him That you know That God is revealing stuff to you And he's constantly Pouring into you Through his word And through life And that he's a God Of transformation He's transforming you Not just for you That you can have The best life now Because the work in you Is a story That he is writing A unique story in you For the people around you That need to hear it And this way This is the way We defend the gospel Nobody's been argued In heaven But people come Because there's a story They see Of a real Jesus in you Which then leads them To greater greater truths It starts Our story God's story Is right in us Uniquely Us telling others" [55:18] (60 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)
