Deepening Spiritual Insight Through Wisdom and Revelation
Devotional
Day 1: Experiencing a Deeper Relationship with God
Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 1:17-19 is a profound call for believers to move beyond mere intellectual understanding and into a deeper, fuller relationship with God. This involves a transformation of both heart and mind, leading to a more profound knowledge of God. The spirit of wisdom and revelation that Paul speaks of is not something entirely new but a deeper experience of what believers already possess through the Holy Spirit. This transformation is not just about gaining knowledge but about experiencing God in a way that changes how one lives and interacts with the world. [01:44]
Ephesians 3:16-19 (ESV): "that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
Reflection: In what ways can you seek a deeper relationship with God today, beyond just intellectual understanding?
Day 2: The Dynamic Relationship Between the Holy Spirit and the Human Spirit
The distinction between the Holy Spirit and the human spirit shaped by wisdom is not explicitly clear in the text, emphasizing the need for contextual interpretation. This highlights the dynamic relationship between the Holy Spirit and the believer's spirit, where the Spirit influences and empowers the believer's understanding. This relationship is not static but involves an ongoing process of growth and transformation, as the Holy Spirit works within the believer to shape their spirit and understanding. [03:14]
1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (ESV): "these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God."
Reflection: How can you be more open to the Holy Spirit's influence in your life today, allowing Him to shape your understanding and actions?
Day 3: Experiencing the Fullness of the Spirit
Being filled with the Spirit, as encouraged in Ephesians 5:18, suggests that believers can experience varying degrees of the Spirit's influence. This fullness leads to greater wisdom, revelation, and a deeper knowledge of God, transforming the believer's life. The idea of being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time event but an ongoing process of growth and renewal, as believers seek to be more fully influenced and empowered by the Spirit in their daily lives. [05:44]
Galatians 5:16-18 (ESV): "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law."
Reflection: What steps can you take today to be more filled with the Spirit, allowing Him to guide and transform your life?
Day 4: The Mindset of the Spirit
The mindset of the Spirit, as described in Romans 8:5, is a key aspect of spiritual growth. This mindset is shaped by the Spirit and leads to life and peace, contrasting with the mindset of the flesh. It involves an ongoing renewal of the mind, aligning it with the Spirit's influence. This renewal is not just about changing one's thoughts but about a complete transformation of one's perspective and approach to life, as the Spirit works within to bring about true peace and life. [06:54]
Colossians 3:1-2 (ESV): "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."
Reflection: How can you actively cultivate a mindset shaped by the Spirit today, focusing on things that lead to life and peace?
Day 5: Spirit-Formed Wisdom and Understanding
Spiritual wisdom and understanding are essential for grasping the revelations given to the apostles. This wisdom is Spirit-formed and Spirit-guided, enabling believers to understand and live out the truths of the gospel, as seen in Paul's letters. The process involves God revealing mysteries to the apostles, who then write them down, and believers, with a Spirit-shaped mindset, understanding and living out these revelations. This wisdom is not just about knowledge but about living in a way that reflects the truths of the gospel in everyday life. [09:02]
James 3:17-18 (ESV): "But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."
Reflection: In what ways can you seek Spirit-formed wisdom today, allowing it to guide your actions and decisions in alignment with the truths of the gospel?
Sermon Summary
In Ephesians 1:17-19, Paul prays for believers to receive the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of God. This prayer is not for something entirely new but for a deeper, fuller experience of what believers already possess through the Holy Spirit. Paul is addressing real Christians, not those lacking faith, and he desires that they grow in their understanding and experience of God. The spirit of wisdom and revelation is not merely an intellectual understanding but a profound, spiritual insight that transforms the believer's life.
The question arises whether the "spirit" mentioned should be understood as the Holy Spirit or the human spirit shaped by wisdom. The original Greek text does not clarify this, leaving it to contextual interpretation. Paul’s prayer is for believers to have a fuller experience of the Holy Spirit, which would lead to a deeper understanding and revelation of God's will. This aligns with Ephesians 5:18, where believers are encouraged to be filled with the Spirit, indicating varying degrees of spiritual experience and influence.
Paul's prayer is for believers to have a mindset shaped by the Spirit, as seen in Romans 8:5, where the mindset of the Spirit leads to life and peace. This mindset is not static but grows as believers are renewed in the spirit of their minds, as described in Ephesians 4:22-23. This renewal involves putting off the old self and embracing a new life in Christ, characterized by spiritual wisdom and understanding.
In Colossians 1:9, Paul prays for believers to be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, which parallels his prayer in Ephesians. This spiritual wisdom is Spirit-formed and Spirit-guided, enabling believers to grasp the revelation given to the apostles. The process involves God revealing mysteries to the apostles, who then write them down, and believers, with a Spirit-shaped mindset, understanding and living out these revelations.

Sermon Clips
He's praying that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you or give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. Now, these are great realities: the spirit of wisdom and of revelation, the knowledge of God, the eyes of your hearts enlightened that you may know. [00:28:40]
Remember that he's praying this is something we need so badly and do not have the fullness of at least that he's asking it would come. He's praying and the second thing to notice is that he's praying for you. Who's you? Well, the you in the preceding verses is I have heard of your face in the Lord Jesus. [01:17:76]
We have by grace as a mark of what it means to be born of God. We have wisdom and we have insight in the knowledge of the mystery of His will. So when he prays that we would have a spirit of wisdom and a revelation, we're not starting from scratch in the answer to this prayer. [04:01:12]
We have the Holy Spirit, so when he prays here that we would be given the spirit of wisdom and of revelation, even if this is to be capitalized, it doesn't mean we're he's praying that the Holy Spirit would come for the first time. He's praying to people who are sealed with the Holy Spirit. [04:40:08]
There are degrees of experience of the Holy Spirit, more or less fullness, more or less power, more or less freedom, more or less sway and control and formation. There are degrees, and so he could be praying here may God grant you the spirit of wisdom and revelation. [05:50:32]
The spirit here shapes the mindset, and if the spirit is fully active, this mindset is more fully the mindset of the spirit. So we come back here and say, so if the spirit that he's praying for were fully granted, fully influential, fully powerful and holding sway in our lives, our spirits would be more fully in tune with the Holy Spirit. [07:00:88]
Be renewed in the spirit of your minds. Whoa, that's an interesting phrase, isn't it? Be renewed in an ongoing way. You are new in Christ now put off that old self completely and grow in your likeness to Christ with the spirit of your mind. The mind has a tone, it has a form, it has a spirit. [07:43:04]
Asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will, how in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. So here instead of praying for the spirit of wisdom, he is praying that we would have spiritual wisdom which would mean spirit form spirit guided wisdom. [08:44:56]
The mystery was made known to me by revelation, so revelation comes to the apostle uniquely as I have written briefly, and then he writes it down. So revelation goes to apostle, apostle writes a letter. When you read this, that's the next thing that happened. [09:40:16]
If this prayer is answered, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, grant or give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation meaning the capacity with God sent wisdom to read and understand and embrace and enjoy and live out the revelation that God has given me. [11:17:04]
Spirit of wisdom and revelation means a Holy Spirit-shaped human spirit, a Holy Spirit influenced and empowered and illumined human spirit which then can grasp the wisdom of Paul's God-given revelation, which now leads to the knowledge of God and then is described as the eyes of our hearts being opened. [11:48:08]
My interpretation is spirit of wisdom and revelation means a Holy Spirit-shaped human spirit, a Holy Spirit influenced and empowered and illumined human spirit which then can grasp the wisdom of Paul's God-given revelation, which now leads to the knowledge of God. [12:04:00]
