"We want to pray for Sue Honstead's been in the hospital this week and not doing well. It's just really been a struggle for the last several weeks. And so we want to anoint Stephanie on her behalf today. The scriptures instruct us that we gather the elders of the church around and we anoint with oil representing the Holy Spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit. Now we don't have a mathematical formula that can articulate what happens in this event. But we have a God who has proven himself over and over and over again." [00:20:46]

"When we are faithful to him, when we cry out in our dependence upon him, that he responds with power and he responds with healing and responds with love. And we're going to believe that he's going to do that here today. So we're going to pray for Sue. And we're also going to we're also going to anoint Pastor David. And we're going to remember the victims in California. They're going through such loss and still dealing with all the mess that's going on there." [00:21:30]

"Prayer is certainly one of the most widely accepted practices of all of Christianity, but it's also one of the least applied practices. In Christianity, it's much easier to preach on prayer than it is to actually pray. Now, how many people would raise their hand today and say, well, I pray too much. I'm spending too much time in prayer. Now, we could raise our hands and say, well, I eat too much. I watch too much football. I watch too much television or on social media too much." [00:45:25]

"Sometimes I think we misunderstand what the purpose of prayer is all about. Sometimes we see prayer as sort of a spiritual vending machine. You know, so God's this celestial being that if we put the right amount of money in, we'll be able to pull out whatever it is we want. You remember those vending machines where you could put in the quarter and you could pull out your grape knee-high? Wasn't that the favorite drink of everybody?" [00:48:12]

"The purpose of prayer is to connect us with God. The purpose of prayer is to connect us in relationship with the living God. And so it's not to get our needs met, although sometimes you think that's all we talk about. But the purpose of prayer is not to get our needs met. It's not to get our needs met, but to connect us with God. The purpose of prayer is to give us access to the creator God of the universe, to the God who created each one of us individually, who hand-fashioned us, hand-made us, and we are created to live in right relationship with him." [00:49:33]

"Prayer was given to us so that we could experience this, this ongoing relationship with God. And so when we see the life of Jesus, I think we see a pretty good model for us on how we're to live and how we're to seek God through prayer. I mean, think about Jesus is the second person of the Trinity, right? He's there when this world was spoken into being. He was the word. He is the word. And he is the reason that this whole world hangs together. He's the one that holds it all together." [00:50:49]

"Yet this is the same Jesus who seeks time to go and be away with the Father in prayer, because it's about a relationship. It's about a connection that he has with his Father. And so the purpose of prayer is not for us to inform God, hey, what's going on here, as is he can't see for himself. But the purpose of prayer is so that we can experience an intimacy with him." [00:51:21]

"Because God wants to communicate to us. He doesn't want one of these one-way relationships where we do all the talking. You know people like that, right? Where you have a conversation with them, but it's just a one-way conversation. They're the ones doing all the talking, and you can't get a word in edgewise. Jesus taught his disciples to pray. Pray. Your kingdom come here on earth as it is in heaven." [00:52:27]

"God has chosen to work through us in this world that he created. He's created us to be his image bearers. And he's created us and set us up to manage his creation. And so he wants us to be his hands and feet in this world. John Wesley said, God will do nothing on earth except in answer to believers' prayer. So we know these kind of statements are true." [00:53:17]

"The simple answer is humility. The greatest obstacle to our prayer is pride. You know, I've got this one, God. I don't need your help on this. I can handle it. Last week, Stephanie and I, we had the three grandkids from Largo come and spend the weekend with us. And it's always lots of fun to have them together with us. And we were outside playing, and they like to be outside. They can't be outside enough. You know, it doesn't matter how cold it is or whatever." [00:56:50]

"Fasting is simply abstaining from food for spiritual purpose. You can abstain from social media, but technically that's not really fasting. Fasting. Fasting involves food, but it's not a bad thing to abstain from social media. It's not a bad thing to abstain from a number of different things, but fasting is the connection of food. And I think there's a particular reason why fasting is important, because God's created us with this body that has desires, hungers, right?" [01:01:00]

"Fasting amplifies our prayers, but it also amplifies our ability to hear from God. And so I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. I'm going to fast. benefits with fasting." [01:03:40]
