Dedication means more than bringing a baby before the Lord for one day. Dedication means being present, standing with that child, loving her, nurturing her, and helping raise her in the ways of Jesus. Luke 2 shows Mary and Joseph bringing Jesus to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord, and that same word, present, presses into Romans 12:1. Romans 12:1 calls saved people to present their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto God.
The living sacrifice does not climb on an altar to die, but lays everyday life down before God. The altar becomes the place where mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, grandparents, church members, singers, workers, and leaders say that every part of life belongs to God for His glory. Sacrifice sometimes looks like prayer beside a child’s bed, Bible reading in the morning, serving without a spotlight, cleaning what needs cleaning, or doing work that feels beneath nobody. Humility refuses to use God only in an emergency and refuses to seek a microphone without a life prepared to worship.
Deuteronomy 6 places God’s Word in the heart before it is taught diligently to children. Proverbs 22:6 calls parents and families to train up a child, not merely wave at that child when church begins. The home becomes a place where children see prayer, hear the Word, learn how to treat people, and discover that Christ changes everyday life. The mind also has to be renewed, because a life conformed to the world cannot prove the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.
Jesus welcomes little children when the disciples want to push them away. The childlike approach comes running to the Father for comfort, protection, and provision, rather than standing far off like somebody who knows it all. The prodigal son shows that a child who has been raised right can come to himself, leave the pigpen, and return home. The Father runs toward the returning child, because God is not holding a stick over His children but has given His Son to set sinners free.
The call to dedication finally reaches beyond a baby dedication. The church cannot fulfill its promise to children unless its people first dedicate themselves afresh to the Lord. Christ’s finished work at Calvary makes sacrificial living a willing response from the heart, not a way to earn salvation. God receives those who confess Christ as Lord, believe that He rose from the dead, and lay their breathing, everyday lives before Him.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Dedication requires faithful presence Dedication cannot stop at a public moment in church. The promise includes showing up in a child’s life with love, correction, prayer, and godly example. The family of God carries a real responsibility to help children know what it looks like to follow Jesus. [42:07]
- 2. Living sacrifice means everyday surrender Romans 12 does not leave sacrifice in the Old Testament altar. Everyday work, relationships, service, and hidden acts of humility become offerings when they are given for God’s glory. A surrendered life refuses to treat any honest service as beneath it. [49:36]
- 3. Preparation protects true worship Worship cannot be separated from the life lived through the week. Bitterness, careless living, and lack of prayer can quench the Holy Spirit even when the songs sound good. A heart prepared before God gives Him room to move with power. [52:12]
- 4. Childlike faith runs to the Father Jesus receives those who come with the trust of a child. Childlike faith does not mean shallow faith, but faith that knows where comfort, protection, healing, and provision are found. The Father welcomes the needy heart that comes honestly and fully dependent on Him. [1:05:57]
- 5. Renewed minds discern God’s will Sacrifice and renewal belong together. A life offered to God needs a mind continually shaped by Scripture rather than by the world’s demands for attention and status. God makes His good and acceptable will known as the mind is renewed in Christ. [1:09:49]
