You are not an accident or a random occurrence. Your place in God's family is the result of a deliberate and loving choice made by the Creator Himself. This divine selection is not based on your merit or abilities, but solely on His grace and purpose. To be chosen is to be invited into a permanent relationship, a secure identity as a beloved child. This truth is the foundation upon which your purpose and calling are built. [30:22]
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9 NIV)
Reflection: In what specific area of your life do you most struggle to believe and live out the truth that God has deliberately chosen you to be part of His family?
Your identity is not just that you are chosen, but that you now belong to God. This belonging is not for His amusement or mere use, but for His intimate care and keeping. Just as a pet owner is responsible for the well-being of their animal, God is responsible for your care. You are His special possession, which means He is committed to your growth, provision, and protection. This belonging comes with the profound security of knowing you are His. [32:48]
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1 John 3:1a NIV)
Reflection: Where in your current circumstances do you need to shift from striving to provide for yourself to resting in the truth that you belong to God and He is responsible for your care?
The call of God is an invitation to leave behind a state of spiritual ignorance and blindness. Darkness, in this sense, is the inability to perceive the spiritual reality of God's kingdom at work all around you. Jesus Christ is the light that illuminates this reality, allowing you to see God's hand in the everyday. This call is not just a one-time event but an ongoing process of having your spiritual eyes opened to perceive His goodness and activity in the world. [37:32]
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. (Ephesians 1:18 NIV)
Reflection: What is one ordinary moment from your recent past where, looking back, you can now see God was at work, illuminating something you may have previously been blind to?
The ultimate purpose of being chosen, belonging, and called is so that you might declare the praises—the goodness—of God. This is the work of evangelism, which simply means sharing the good news of what you have seen and experienced. You are called to do this not because you are a skilled speaker, but because you have a story of His mercy. God often uses our weaknesses and inabilities to powerfully demonstrate His strength and grace to others. [35:41]
He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV)
Reflection: What perceived weakness or past failure have you allowed to disqualify you from sharing God's goodness, and how might He want to use that very story to display His power?
Being part of God's family is not a passive identity; it comes with the responsibility and joy of serving within the family. There is no retirement from this call to active participation. Serving is how God's kingdom is advanced on earth, and it is the natural response to the mercy we have received. Your place of service is not necessarily where you feel most skilled, but where you are most needed and called to be faithful. [42:30]
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. (Galatians 5:13 NIV)
Reflection: What is one practical, next-step invitation to serve that God has been placing in your path, and what is holding you back from simply saying "yes" to it?
The congregation receives a clear, urgent reminder of identity and purpose rooted in 1 Peter 2:9–10. God chooses people not as anonymous individuals but as family—called, belonging, and cared for by a holy King. That chosenness carries distinct titles: a royal priesthood serving the King, a holy nation set apart, and God’s special possession—words that stress belonging and divine responsibility rather than mere privilege. The critical connective word “so that” frames all identity language as purposeful: God calls and transforms people in order that they might declare and evangelize the goodness of God to others.
Darkness here denotes spiritual ignorance and blindness; light means the capacity to see spiritual realities and perceive God at work in everyday life. Being called out of that darkness into marvelous light equips people to notice God’s kingdom around them and to testify to it. Belonging to God brings duties: family members serve one another, contribute their gifts, and labor for the kingdom’s flourishing. Service flows from relationship, not from perfect skill or spotless resumes. The text insists that imperfections, past failures, illness, or brokenness do not remove the call; repentance, mercy, and ongoing healing mark the faithful life.
Practical application follows theological claim. The community must answer two simple questions: has the call been received, and how is each person serving as part of God’s family? Local ministries, mission projects, and small acts of hospitality all incarnate the declared goodness of God. Willingness to say “yes” matters more than polished competence; divine calling often uses weakness to reveal grace. The culmination invites personal response—prayerful surrender, public affirmation, and tangible steps into ministry—so that God’s kingdom becomes visible in the neighborhood, the nation, and the world.
If you hear my voice, you're the one. You were chosen by God to be a part of his family. Serving the king as a mediator between him and the people, a member of a set apart specifically designed group that brand belongs to God who is responsible to care for. He did all of this for a reason. The reason is so that you might declare and evangelize those around you by sharing with them the goodness of this God who invited you to come out of your spiritual ignorance and receive the ability to know him and perceive the things of this kingdom.

ever look at one of those, before you ever consider how you might serve in the church, just tell God you're willing to do whatever he needs and then watch what he points you to. I used to have a friend and said when we would call to invite people to serve in this ministry, that ministry, this board or something, the most common answer from a Christian is, let me pray about that. Here's an idea. Go ahead and pray today. Go ahead and be prayed up. So when somebody calls you, you're ready to say yes because you knew if you were praying for that, you were praying for that call. You were praying for that invitation to serve. You were praying for that board over there to be highlighted. You were praying for that ministry in this church to just stand out to you so that you would be able to see, yeah, that's God leading me. I asked for him to lead me. I asked for him to use me, and here he is asking for that, inviting me into that. So I'll step into that place so that I can declare the goodness of God, so that I can declare the praises of the one who called me out of darkness and into that marvelous light.

We used to be a part of a ministry in Tennessee that we love dearly. One of the things we would would get together for a a three day weekend, and there would be a continuous sequence of about 15 talks. Five of those were given by pastors from various denominations. The other 10 were given by people such as yourself. You know which ones were the most powerful? Those given by laypeople, not the pastors. One of the reasons why was that most of the laypeople that gave the speeches were not good speakers. And so people tell me sometimes, well, I keep talking in front of people because I get nervous and I say the wrong thing just not as polished as other people. But when you see three hundred and fifty pound electrician get up there in his overalls because he doesn't have a Sunday suit to wear on that day, and he starts sharing with you about God at work in his life, and you can tell real quickly that he don't wanna be doing that. That he is not comfortable with that, but he loves you enough to do it anyway. And he's sharing not because it's his gift, but in spite of his gifts.

As we see this and we share, I wanna make sure that we understand that you are the chosen one. Jesus is the one of the chosen, but you are also a chosen one. Not just other people, not just people who have different skills and talents as well. No. You are chosen not because of your skills and talents. You are chosen to serve because God loves you. And if he calls you to serve, then he gives you the ability to do that in the way that he is calling you to do.

The other question is have you answered the call in the first place? And if you haven't, then that's okay. You're not you you don't you don't need to serve yet if you still don't see yourself as part of the family. And and let me clarify, I don't mean the family of First Church here in Lake City. I mean the family of God. We serve with folks at Bethel and at Wesley and in Tallahassee and in Tennessee and in Zimbabwe, in Cboe, Manila, in Sydney, all over the world. We serve as part of the family of God. And what he asks you to do is to plug in to a local group where you're at and find ways to serve. There are local missions that you can get involved with. There are services such as today, if I counted, I I should've counted. There's probably 20 some odd people that made this service today work right.

But people say that disqualifies you. Well, you you have sinned in the past. Really? So what sin is it that God can't forget? I'll wait while you look it up if you want to, but I'll give you a hint. It has nothing to do with any of the things that I did in my past. Why? Because I've listened to the Holy Spirit and I've repented of those things. If you have sin in your life that you're not repented of, okay, then that may mean that's not a disqualification for service. That means you need to take time for healing. That means you need to seek the Lord in healing right now so that you can get your cup filled before you worry about pouring it out.

That word chosen does not mean that you pick the squash over the zucchini at the market on Sunday. You know what the word chosen means? It is applied only to God. It means you are chosen by God. There's a word only reserved for God's choice. He's a little different than us. He is that, as we said before, that holy other, and I don't mean h o l y. I mean, w h o l l y, like completely of it. And when it says people, that doesn't mean that you are a human being, almost safety, and that word people refers to family.

He invited you to leave behind your darkness. When we talked about this a few weeks ago, the word darkness, the same as it meant in John chapter one is spiritual ignorance, spiritual blindness, being ignorant to the spiritual things around you. An ignorant is not a bad word. We're not cursing someone that simply means they lack the knowledge of. You are unable to see what God is doing in the spiritual realm.
