I Thought It Was God… But I Was Wrong: Deception Pt. 3 | God-Breathed Church | Pastor Pierre Aristil

Deception starts with a simple question, and Genesis keeps showing that Satan’s old trick is not always ugly at first. Deception questions God’s word, then uses trusted voices, then slips in through things that look good, feel right, and make sense. Peter loved Jesus, had good intentions, and wanted to protect him, but Jesus still said, “Get behind me, Satan,” because Peter was seeing from a human point of view and not from God’s.

“Not every good thing is a God thing” does not fight James 1, because God’s definition of good is not the same as man’s definition of good. Man looks at what is impressive, but God looks at what is surrendered. First Samuel shows Jesse leaving David in the field because David did not look like a king, but God saw the heart. Discernment, then, is not always choosing between good and evil. Sometimes discernment is choosing between what looks right and what God says is right.

Genesis 4 brings Cain and Abel right into the center of that warning. Cain brought an offering, and Abel brought an offering, but God accepted Abel and rejected Cain. Cain just brought something. Abel brought the best, and Hebrews says Abel brought it by faith. God determines what is right, not the person bringing the gift. The issue was not whether they gave. The issue was whether they obeyed.

Good intentions do not replace obedience. Cain approached God on his own terms, and that is still the mistake. A person can come to church, sing, give, clap, post the verse, and still hold back the one thing the Holy Spirit has been saying to release. Obedience is better than sacrifice because God is not looking for whatever is convenient. God is looking for surrender to his voice.

Good ideas do not replace God’s timing. Sarah and Abraham had a plan that worked, but Ishmael was not God’s plan. Isaac was the promised son. Faith waits, but manipulation rushes. Faith trusts, but control forces. Proverbs 3 calls every plan, thought, intention, and idea to bow before the Lord instead of leaning on personal understanding.

Good motives do not replace God’s will. Peter’s love was real, but his love was standing against the cross. The heart feels deeply, but Jeremiah says the heart is deceitful, and feelings make terrible leaders. Results, popularity, and open doors do not prove God’s approval. The broad road is attractive because it is easy and full, but the narrow road has to be found.

Counterfeit money is exposed by knowing the real thing, and discernment works the same way. God’s people do not become free by becoming experts in every fake thing. God’s people become free by knowing truth, because truth remains, truth does not change, and truth sets people free.
