John 5:19-24 begins with an accusation that Jesus made Himself equal with God, and Jesus answers, “You got this one right.” The Son can do nothing of Himself because He only does what He sees the Father doing, and whatever the Father does, the Son does in like manner. Jesus does God stuff: He gives life, forgives sins, reveals the invisible God, walks on the waves, and never meets a need too broken, too sinful, or too far gone for His power.
The Father’s love for the Son appears in the works He shows Him, including the authority to raise the dead and execute judgment. Jesus is not merely a great moral teacher, because a man who claims equality with God must be Lord, liar, or lunatic. Christ alone fully manifests the Father. The fullness of deity dwells bodily in Him, so anyone who wants to know what God is like must look at Jesus.
Sonship also carries implications for those who belong to Christ. Sons and daughters of God are called to reflect the family resemblance: mercy, holiness, love, forgiveness, and the visible life of Christ in His body. Identity cannot remain anchored in old bondage, family damage, or former sin. The Savior should define His people, because Jesus breaks sin’s bondage and gives increasing victory.
Jesus gives life like the Father gives life. Death has been unlocked because Christ died, rose again, and took the keys of death and Hades from the enemy. Physical death still brings real grief, but it cannot separate believers from the love of God or erase the certainty of resurrection. Death is the end of pain, disease, temptation, bitterness, and bondage for the believer. Christ has inverted death from a final defeat into an entrance home.
The Father also gives all judgment to the Son. Judgment does not authorize condemning people or acting like a district attorney over the world. Biblical judgment calls believers to test doctrine, discern fruit, confront sin in love, and seek restoration rather than personal victory. The body of Christ should not judge when it should not, nor refuse to judge when God commands it.
The Father shares honor with the Son, and the Son shares His glory with His people. Unity reveals that glory, not sameness in politics, culture, personality, or preference. Love becomes the ligament that binds very different believers together when each one is tuned to Christ. Eternal life, finally, is not merely what comes after death. Jesus says the believer has already passed out of death into life. Eternal life begins now through knowing God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus does what the Father does Jesus does not merely represent God from a distance. The Son reveals the Father because His works, authority, compassion, and judgment are God’s works in flesh. Faith in Christ rests on more than admiration for His morality; it rests on His identity as the full revelation of God. [39:47]
- 2. The Savior should define identity Sin can leave deep marks on a life, a family, and a mind, but it does not get the final word over a Christian’s identity. Christ does not only forgive former bondage; He breaks its ruling power and forms a new family resemblance in His children. Believers should be known first by who they are in Christ, not by what once held them captive. [41:22]
- 3. Death has been turned inside out Death still brings separation and grief, but Christ has taken away its ultimate sting. The body may die, yet disease, temptation, pain, and every remaining effect of the fall die with it for those in Christ. Jesus holds the key, so death becomes a departure home rather than a hopeless end. [64:29]
- 4. Love creates Christ-centered unity Unity does not mean Christians share every preference, political conviction, culture, or personality. Christ Himself becomes the common source of life for people who otherwise might have nothing in common. Love melts pride, prejudice, and preference so that the world sees a unity that human agreement cannot manufacture. [84:37]
- 5. Eternal life starts right now Eternal life is not a reward handed out after death to those who finally arrive in heaven. Jesus says the believer already has eternal life and has already passed from death into life. Knowing Christ now gives confidence that the case has already been settled through His finished work.
