The Day the Sun Stood Still (Joshua 10:1-43)

Joshua 10 shows what happens when the enemy groups together to push back against the progress God has made. Adoni-Zedek, the so-called lord of righteousness, stands as a counterfeit ruler gathering five Amorite kings against Gibeon, a city that had made peace with Israel. The enemy comes hard when people begin walking with God, especially when they are young, weak, or just stepping away from old sin.

The Gibeonites cry out to Joshua, and Joshua, whose name points to Jesus, keeps the covenant even though Gibeon had deceived him. Joshua marches all night from Gilgal because integrity keeps its word even when keeping that word hurts. God answers Joshua before the battle begins: “Do not fear them, for I have delivered them into your hand.” Christ’s victory means believers fight from victory, not for victory, yet God’s sovereignty never becomes an excuse to sit on the haunches and do nothing.

Joshua’s uphill march shows that faith puts hands to the plow. God brings the hailstones, and more enemies die by God’s artillery than by Israel’s sword. God’s wrath falls upon the enemy, but God does not pour His wrath upon His children. The Lord presses His people, but He does not crush them.

Joshua’s bold command for the sun and moon to stand still shows that God is able to do what human logic cannot handle. Jesus also finished every work the Father gave Him, not every demand people placed upon Him. Christ’s early-morning prayer and single-minded obedience confront the tyranny of the busy schedule. The Father gives wisdom for the day when His people come quietly before Him and surrender the day’s choices.

Joshua refuses partial victories when the five kings hide in the cave. The cave pictures hidden sin: self-righteousness, hypocrisy, drifting from first love, sexual immorality, and love of money. Sin cannot be coddled in the dark; it must be dragged into the light, confessed to Jesus, and put to death. Christ has disarmed principalities and powers, and God will crush Satan under His people’s feet.

Joshua returns to Gilgal after victory because Gilgal remembers the shame rolled away, the flesh cut off, and the Passover sacrifice. The cross remains the place of humility, dependence, cleansing, and fresh strength. God fights for His people, and hidden sin must come out of the cave so that grace, mercy, and true victory may be known.
