37s
“We don't become United Methodist for the sake of the church. We become a particular kind of church for the sake of God's world. Do I need to say that again? We don't become United Methodist for the sake of the church. We become a particular kind of church for the sake of God's world. I really want you to hold on to that. Wesley's greatest fear was that we'd become a dead sect. Are we?”
37s
“Not how do we make sure the church survives, but how do we faithfully participate in what god is already doing? But these questions do require something of us. They may lead us into things that we haven't even imagined yet. They may require us to listen more carefully. They may mean that some things we love continue and other things change. Faithfulness, hear this now, faithfulness has never met standing still. If we are stagnant in our faith, we're doing it wrong.”
38s
“But friends, this is our moment to be the church, in this community, with these neighbors, with the needs that exist right now. And so perhaps the best way to end a series being United Methodist is not what the definition of what a United Methodist is. Perhaps we end where Jesus does, looking outward, seeing the people around us, allowing ourselves to be moved by that compassion, trusting that God is already there. Grace is enough to lead us forward.”
