From Brokenness to Restoration: David's Pursuit and Recovery

God wants to restore and replenish, and no life is ever too far gone for His restoring hand. David at Ziklag gives the picture. David comes home to burned ruins, stolen family, crushed men, and friends talking about stoning him to death. David and his men weep until there is no strength left to weep, because everything that looked like support is gone.

David’s distress does not mean God has left him. God uses trouble to keep His children in alignment and in rhythm with Him, even when that kind of truth does not feel favorable. God allows some things to touch a life, not because He is trying to destroy it, but because He is bringing that life back to the place where it can hear Him again. The enemy damages, steals, kills, and destroys. God gracefully breaks without damaging, and He knows how to bring somebody through a broken place able to recover and be better.

David’s past does not cancel God’s mercy. David had done things, including violence and robbery, that gave people plenty to say about what he deserved. God’s grace and mercy, however, do not discipline His children as much as their sins deserve. Sin may bring repercussions, but failure does not have the final word for a heart that is troubled by sin and willing to repent. Premeditated sin remains dangerous, but brokenness before God opens the way for restoration.

David finds strength in the Lord his God when no person can strengthen him. David does not wait around for somebody else to encourage him, because the strength of the Lord is available to those who wait with expectation. God’s rejected doors can become proof of His protection, just as the Philistine leaders sending David away kept him from returning to an even worse disaster. God’s past deliverance gives faith something to remember when present circumstances look impossible.

David inquires of the Lord, receives direction, and pursues what was taken. God tells David that he will recover all, but David still has to move, advance, chase, and capture.
