6/21/2026 "David & the Ark" - 2 Samuel 6:1-23

Acts 13:22 gives the key to David’s life, a man after God’s own heart is someone willing to do everything God wants done. Not some of it, not most of it, but all of it, even the small things that seem insignificant. Second Samuel 6 puts that truth right in front of David, because David starts with zeal, messes it up, then changes and does it God’s way.

Under Saul’s reign, Israel had become spiritually bankrupt. The tabernacle had fallen apart, the furnishings were scattered or lost, and the very symbol of God’s presence was gone. The ark of the covenant was not just a box. It was the place of the mercy seat, the place where God said He would meet His people, the place where His holiness and glory were pictured before Israel.

David wants worship back at the center of Israel, so he goes all out. Thirty thousand men come along, a brand-new cart is brought in, and all Israel celebrates with music and dancing. But the new cart was not God’s way. The ark was supposed to be carried by consecrated Levites with poles on their shoulders, exactly as God had commanded.

Uzzah reaches out when the oxen stumble, and God strikes him down for irreverence. The text is not showing the harshness of God, but the holiness of God. Uzzah had lived around the ark long enough to become familiar with it, and familiarity can breed contempt. God is holy, holy, holy, and sinful man cannot reach up and grab what God has marked as most holy.

David’s real failure was that he did not inquire of God about the prescribed way. God cares about details. The little foxes ruin the vineyard, and small acts of disobedience grow into big trouble when they are ignored. God’s people cannot pick and choose what seems important and leave the rest alone.

When the ark rests at Obed Edom’s house, God blesses that household. David sees it, learns from his mistake, gathers the Levites, and brings the ark up the right way. This time obedience leads to freedom. David dances before the Lord with all his might, and his joy is the joy of a man who has repented, obeyed, and found freedom in God’s presence.

Michael despises David’s worship, but David will not let anyone stand between him and the Lord. Worship is before God, not before people. God is holy, and God calls His people to grow in holiness and worship with a heart that is ready, reverent, and unabashed.
