Daniel’s Vision and the Coming Kingdom of God

Daniel 7 turns from the stories and dreams of the first six chapters toward what is yet to come. The text moves from principles for living now, such as refusing compromise, trusting God for deliverance, and remembering that earthly kingdoms do not last, to prophecy that gives God’s perspective on history. Biblical prophecy does not miss, even when people misunderstand it. God stands outside the limits of time, sees the whole picture, and knows what is coming.

Daniel’s vision begins with four winds stirring up the great sea. The sea pictures peoples, nations, languages, and the restless trouble of a world in rebellion. The four beasts rise from that churning water with different visions, different power, and different kingdoms behind them. The lion with eagle’s wings, the bear with ribs in its mouth, the four headed leopard, and the dreadful iron toothed beast portray the rise and fall of kingdoms that look mighty for a season but never last forever.

Daniel’s beasts closely parallel Nebuchadnezzar’s statue: Babylon, Medo Persia, Greece, and Rome. The lion may point to Babylon and Nebuchadnezzar’s later mercy toward the people of God. The bear fits Medo Persia’s conquest, the leopard fits Greece’s swift rise and later division under four generals, and the terrible beast fits Rome’s crushing power. Prophecy, however, calls for an open mind, because it is never fully understood until it is fully fulfilled. God alone knows the time and season, while His people are called to be ready.

The little horn speaks great things, pictures arrogant rebellion, and points toward the antichrist. Daniel’s vision then shifts from the loud mouth of the horn to the throne of the Ancient of Days. God takes His seat in perfect holiness, fire goes out from before Him, countless angelic beings serve Him, and the court sits in judgment as the books are opened. John sees that same heavenly reality and hears millions upon millions declaring, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.”

Christ alone can open the scroll and bring in the kingdom that will never end. Daniel sees the beast destroyed, and Revelation confirms that the beast and false prophet will be thrown into the lake of fire. Satan presently exercises stolen authority in a fallen world because Adam yielded dominion through disobedience. Christ, the second Adam, refused Satan’s offer in the wilderness, paid the price for redemption, and will finally repossess what belongs to Him. Sin makes people servants of the one they obey, but Christ sets His people free to become servants of righteousness leading to holiness.
