Testimony in a Pagan Culture: Lessons from Daniel

Daniel begins with a people under judgment. Second Chronicles shows Jerusalem burned, the temple destroyed, and the young men of Judah carried into Babylon because Israel had followed the abominations of the heathen. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah enter a pagan kingdom after growing up in a nation that had become pagan itself. God preserves godly young men even when the culture around them has gone completely the wrong way.

Daniel purposes in his heart that he will not defile himself. That purpose does not make Daniel rude, proud, or difficult. God gives Daniel favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs before the request about the king’s meat is ever made. Daniel shows that a Christian testimony in a pagan culture should not aim to be offensive, but it also cannot blend in. Daniel takes a stand, makes a respectful request, and leaves the results up to God.

God gives the four young men knowledge, skill, learning, and wisdom. Nebuchadnezzar finds them ten times better than the magicians and astrologers in his realm, yet the king first notices the servants more than he recognizes the God behind them. Daniel and his friends apply themselves, work hard, obey authority where they can, and remain true to God where compromise is demanded. Their different life makes God attractive without making them like Babylon.

Daniel 2 moves Nebuchadnezzar from being impressed with God’s servants to being impressed with God Himself. Daniel seeks prayer support from his friends when the king’s decree threatens their lives. God reveals the secret, and Daniel refuses to take the glory for himself: “There is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets.” Nebuchadnezzar still worships Daniel in his pagan confusion, but his eyes have begun to move past the servant toward the true God.

Daniel 3 brings another step. The fiery furnace proves that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego will yield their bodies rather than worship another god. God does not promise them deliverance before they stand, but Christ meets them in the fire. Nebuchadnezzar blesses their God and declares that no god can deliver after this sort, though his thinking is still bent by paganism.

Daniel 4 brings Nebuchadnezzar to humble acknowledgement of the King of heaven. God abases the proud king, restores his understanding, and leads him to praise the One whose dominion is everlasting. The progress takes about thirty years. God uses steady lives, clear words, hard stands, patient waiting, and difficult fires to point pagan people toward Christ.
