Paul confronts a disordered belief about sex in 1 Corinthians 7. Some in Corinth had come out of a city saturated with sexual sin, and they had swung so far in the other direction that they treated sex itself, even within marriage, as wrong. Paul corrects that muddy view by showing that God created sexuality and gave it a proper place.
God’s order puts sex within the covenant of marriage between a husband and wife. Sexual temptation is real for every person, and marriage can serve as a guard against sexual immorality, though marriage does not magically solve a lust problem. The person most vulnerable to sin is often the person who assumes, “I would never do that,” while wisdom recognizes weakness and refuses to get close to the wrong situation.
The fireplace pictures God’s design clearly. Sex in the fireplace is good, warm, and awesome. Sex outside the fireplace, whether through pornography, affairs, hookup culture, sexual activity before marriage, or other distortions, leaves scars and can burn the whole house down. God’s commands are not merely “no, no, no.” God says yes to the goodness of sex, but calls it to remain where it does not destroy.
Paul then describes marriage intimacy as giving, not taking. A spouse cannot turn biblical language about authority over the body into a baseball bat for manipulation, pressure, or selfish demands. Sexual intimacy requires deep trust, care, and selflessness. Character matters before marriage because a ring changes nothing about character. A dating relationship marked by selfish taking will not become selfless simply because it becomes a marriage.
Paul also warns against using sex as a weapon. Healthy Christian marriages should make sexual intimacy a priority, while recognizing that health struggles, pregnancy, relational conflict, trauma, and other situations may affect what that looks like. Sexual struggles are often revealers. Sometimes the issue is directly sexual, but often the deeper issue is distrust, meanness, unresolved conflict, or relational distance.
Paul finally honors singleness as a gift from God. Singleness can free a person to serve God’s purposes with focused attention, while the desire for marriage and sex is not sinful or shameful. The danger comes when a person marries the wrong person merely to be married or to have sex. Christ remains the answer for every kind of sin and regret, because the cross carries no caveat for sexual sin.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Keep sex inside God’s fireplace [15:25] God did not create sex as something dirty or shameful. God created it as a good gift with a specific home: covenant marriage between a husband and wife. Sexuality outside that place may promise freedom, but it leaves scars that God never intended His children to carry. [15:25]
- 2. Marriage does not cure lust [13:01] Marriage is a guard against sexual immorality, but it is not a fix for a heart ruled by lust. A person who will not deal honestly with temptation before marriage should not assume a wedding ring will solve the issue afterward. Humility, boundaries, and dependence on Christ matter because nobody is beyond temptation. [13:01]
- 3. Intimacy gives, never takes [19:31] Biblical intimacy is never permission to pressure, manipulate, or demand. A husband and wife are called to give themselves in love, with deep trust and care for one another. Selfishness in dating is not a small warning sign, because character does not change just because a ring goes on a finger. [19:31]
- 4. Sexual struggles can reveal deeper wounds [27:23] Sexual distance in marriage is sometimes rooted in sexual issues, but it is often rooted in relational issues. Distrust, unresolved hurt, harshness, and emotional distance can all show up in the bedroom. Honest conversation, wise counsel, and real help may be the path God uses to bring healing. [27:23]
- 5. Singleness is a gift for God’s purposes [29:30] Singleness is not a waiting room for real life to begin. God can use a single person with unusual freedom and focus for kingdom work. Marriage may be a future gift, but the present season is still a place for surrender, service, and full obedience to Christ.
