Week 3 - When Culture Wears the Crown - 8.30.26 - New Life Church of Dyersburg

Culture can wear a crown in a heart that belongs to Jesus. The contrast is plain: a person can become a disciple of culture, or that person can make disciples of Christ. Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Jesus, the disciples, and Paul all refused to let the world set the terms. Christ followers are called to be thermostats, not thermometers. A thermometer only reads the room, but a thermostat changes it.

Romans 12 turns theology into application. Paul calls believers to put their whole bodies on the altar as living and holy sacrifices, acceptable to God and not merely acceptable to themselves. A living sacrifice wiggles when the altar starts to hurt, because self-denial costs something. Paul warns that copying the behaviors and customs of the world happens organically. Culture gets in there subtly, through shows, music, work environments, family expectations, feelings, and performance.

God transforms people by changing the way they think. Metamorphosis means something should look noticeably different afterward. God’s Word must be going in, because the income affects the outcome. Culture is not automatically bad, but it becomes a problem when it has more voice than Scripture. God’s will is good, pleasing, and perfect, and faithfulness matters more than chasing a big, impressive thing.

Feelings are valid consultants, but they are terrible bosses. Performance is an exhausting lie that says a person must do more to be loved more. The Father called Jesus His beloved Son before Jesus performed public miracles. Identity sits in Him, not in degrees, appearance, achievement, busyness, or religious striving. The biblical God is not a version shaped by personal preferences, but the holy, loving, righteous, forgiving, and disciplining God revealed in the Book.

Paul’s picture of Christ’s body calls every gift into faithful action: serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, and showing kindness. Culture creates Christian hypocrites when outward profession does not line up with actual life. Jesus creates selfless followers who deny themselves, pick up their crosses, and count the cost. The cost of following Jesus is real, but the cost of not following Him is too expensive.

The gospel also turns enemies into neighbors. Paul commands genuine love, honor, hospitality, peace, blessing for persecutors, and refusal to repay evil with evil. Jesus washed Judas’ feet knowing Judas would betray Him. Christ’s people cannot let hatred override God’s love. The gospel bids people come and die, so that Christ can live through them.

Salvation cannot be performed into existence, because it is received through faith in a perfect Savior. Confession brings hidden things into the light where healing can begin. Jesus must sit on the throne, not entertainment, emotions, resentment, or approval.
