Cultivating God’s Purpose Through Work and Worship

David’s words in Psalm 139 put purpose and design right in front of every person. God saw each life before it was formed, wrote the days down, and put something in every person before they ever came out of their mother’s womb. Purpose is not something somebody gets after a degree, a job, or a title. Purpose is already there as raw material, and God calls each person to look back over life and see what has been in them all along.

Genesis gives the kingdom assignment. God tells Adam and Eve to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, and have dominion. Dominion means rule and reign, but it does not mean sitting around waiting for things to happen. Culture comes from cultivate. God gives seeds, trees, abilities, relationships, homes, children, ideas, and land as raw material, then He says, “Now develop it.”

The garden shows that God does not hand people finished products. God gave Adam a garden to tend and keep. Work, worship, service, and ministry all come together in the word abad. A job is not just about money. Work is service unto the Lord, whether somebody is on the phones, driving an Uber, working at McDonald’s, nursing patients, building highways, raising children, or setting up chairs. God uses work to develop character and to make people serve those around them with love.

The image of God remains in every person, even when that person is acting crazy. Forgiveness recognizes that image, while correction still brings crooked places straight. Families are raw material too. Marriage must be cultivated. Children must be directed like arrows. Friends must be cultivated. A home must decide what comes in and what does not come in. Love does not mean letting everything go. Love watches, prays, speaks truth, and helps people become what God put inside them.

Genesis also shows God hovering over what was without form and void. God takes emptiness and wasteland, warms it up, speaks into it, and brings order out of it. Sons of God carry that same assignment in the earth. They take what is out of order and bring it into order. They take a garden and build a city. They take an idea, put feet to it, and stop talking loud while saying nothing.

Cultivation rearranges raw material so everybody can flourish. A chair, a meal, a road, and a cup of coffee all reveal people serving through many different assignments. Ministry is bigger than a church title. Ministry is every act of faithful service that helps people and the world thrive.
