"here we are Luke chapter 8 this morning and if you're new to Manoa Community Church we've been going verse by verse through the gospel according to Luke in a preaching series called the seeking Savior because Jesus is on the hunt to seek and to save the lost Luke 19 verse 10 a key verse of this entire book and we're here in chapter 8 where Jesus launches into one of his parables now Jesus is notorious for these parables these these riddles these stories that unlock secrets of the kingdom these truths of God and I love that God when he reveals himself to the world doesn't drop an encyclopedia on our lap he doesn't even don't tell my seminary professors drop a systematic theology book on our lap I love the Westminster confession of faith it's our confessional document it shows what we believe our doctrine but there's something about stories that get into our hearts isn't there I think it's telling that when God wanted to tell the good news about Jesus he gave us the story not once not twice but four times Matthew Mark Luke and John he told it to us in a story and then he put stories inside of the story right called parables my kids love a good story when I was when they were younger they just want to sit on our bed and read stories together and I think that's what the father does for us he he reveals himself through the form of stories and today is one of the most famous parables it's called the parable of the sower or the soils where Jesus tells a story about a man who goes to scatter seeds and what happens to those seeds we heard it in the public reading of scripture but in some ways this is the parable that explains all parables because Jesus gives us in the first place so that we would know the secrets of the kingdom so I've entitled today's sermon five secrets to win because it's celebrate the win Sunday and also we're praying for some wins today so I have some Eagles illustrations baked into today's sermon but it gives us five secrets to grow and to win in the Christian life in our faith and in our church so I'm going to be reading it in its entirety verses 4 to 15." "let's go ahead and please stand for the public reading of God's word I will reread verses 4 to 8 but then go all the way to verse 14 and 15 where he gives us the purpose of the parables and when a great crowd was gathered and people from town after town came to him came to Jesus he said in a parable a sower went out to sow his seed and as he sowed some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot and the birds of the air devoured it and some fell on the rock and as it grew up it withered away because it had no moisture and some fell among thorns and the thorns grew up with it and choked it and some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold and as he said these things he called out he who has ears to hear let him hear and when his disciples asked him what this parable meant he said to you it has been given to know the fruits of the kingdom of God but for others they are in parables so that seeing they may not see and hearing they may not understand now the parable is this the seed is the word of God the ones along the path are those who have heard then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts so that they may not believe and be saved the ones on the Rock are those who when they hear the word receive it with joy but these have no root they believe while, and in times of testing, fall away. As for those, excuse me, as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature." "He's saying we're putting down some roots here that will blossom in time. And I think that's powerful because as Jesus is giving this imagery and this story to his disciples and to this broader audience, he's talking about putting down deep roots that'll bear great fruit into the future. But some people don't have the patience for the fruit and just kind of perish along the way. They don't receive. The roots that will bear the fruit in the long term. Now, as I said earlier, Jesus tells us these parables and then sometimes they're self -evident what they mean. Other times they're a little confusing and this one would be confusing. But Jesus gives us the parable decoder ring when he pulls the disciples aside and gives them the side secret explanation." [00:06:40] (49 seconds)

"The Word of God is what feeds our souls, and the Word of God is what produces fruit in our lives. And if that's true, and it is, and since that's true, I want to find every which way I can get the Word of God into my life, into our church, and into our families. Amen? Prioritize God's Word. If you want to win in the Christian life, the Word of God is central. Secondly, five secrets. We need to renounce the devil, because Jesus says there is an enemy trying to thwart God's Word in our hearts and our lives. Put it back on the screen related to the path. He says in verse 5, the second part, and as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds... The birds of the hour devoured it. They said, what are you talking about? Here's the secret. He pulls back the paper. Go ahead to the next slide." [00:14:11] (53 seconds)

"The ones along the path are those who have heard, and then the devil comes and takes away the Word from their hearts so that they may not believe and be saved. So, to be clear, this second group hears the Word, but they don't believe, right? That's what the Word of God says. They didn't believe it. They have a hard path, this trampled path that it doesn't penetrate, and people just step on it, and then the birds come and snatch it away. And Jesus says, those aren't simply birds, and they aren't simply hecklers in the crowd. The devil himself will steal away the Word of God before it bears fruit in your life if you have a hard heart." [00:15:04] (42 seconds)

"This is the rocky soil where the devil is. He says, it doesn't have root. Please put it on the screen. He says, and some, in verse 6, fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away because it had no moisture. Then he unlocks the secret in verse 13, and the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root, and they believe for a while, and in time of testing, fall. Away. Now, as we go down the line, these get more and more sobering, don't they? Because this one, it gives the appearance of a true profession. This is the one that says they kind of have one foot into the kingdom and one foot out, but in times of testing, they don't make it. Now, we do believe in the perseverance of the saints at this church. We believe, I believe God chose me from eternity past, before I was even born. Why? That's what my Bible says, right?"
