[00:53:01]Observation questions- What details in Mark 7 show the woman’s urgency, humility, and persistence as she comes to Jesus?
- What does Matthew add to Mark’s account about the woman’s request, Jesus’ silence, and the disciples’ response? [00:27:01]
- In Jesus’ picture of children, bread, and dogs, what words show that there is an order—“first”—but not necessarily a permanent exclusion?
- What does the woman’s answer, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs,” reveal about what she believes Jesus is able and willing to give? [00:46:12]
Interpretation questions- Jesus says He was sent first to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel,” yet He also responds to this Gentile woman with mercy. How does this help explain that the gospel came through Israel but was always meant to reach all nations? [00:43:36]
- Why is the woman’s request for mercy different from demanding what is fair or deserved? What does that difference reveal about how sinners come to God?
- Matthew 15 calls this woman’s faith “great.” What makes her faith great: her strength, her persistence, her understanding of Jesus, or something else? How do these things fit together? [00:51:19]
- James 4:6 says God gives grace to the humble. How can both self-righteousness (“I am good enough”) and hopeless shame (“I am too bad”) keep a person from humbly receiving grace? [01:00:59]
Application questions- Where have you recently felt like Jesus has been silent while you have been praying about something painful or urgent? How does this woman’s example encourage you to keep coming to Him? [01:02:55]
- Is there an area where you tend to approach God as though He owes you something because of your effort, morality, church attendance, or sacrifice? What would it look like to come instead asking for mercy?
- Is it easier for you to believe “I am too good to need help” or “I am too far gone to be helped”? What specific truth about Christ’s mercy do you need to bring against that lie this week? [01:01:25]
- The woman trusted that even a crumb from Christ was enough for her deepest need. What need, burden, sin, or fear are you tempted to treat as bigger than Jesus’ grace? [00:52:38]
- Jesus welcomes needy people who come to Him and say, “Lord, I need you.” What could a more honest and humble prayer life look like for you this week? [00:36:45]
- Jesus was rejected and took sin and shame on the cross so that undeserving people could be welcomed as God’s children. How does this truth change the way you view yourself—and the way you view someone you have been tempted to see as too far from God? #!!01:06:31!!
