Paul’s words in Galatians 2:20-21 cut against the way most people try to find themselves, follow their heart, live their dreams, and become the best version of themselves. Jesus calls disciples not to self-improvement, but to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Him. The crucified life begins like a funeral: “I have been crucified with Christ.” The old life dies so that Christ can live in and through the believer.
The cross confronts the lie that Jesus needs help. Paul writes against false teachers who made salvation into Jesus plus the law, Jesus plus circumcision, or Jesus plus good works. Jesus plus anything equals nothing, because if the cross does not atone for sin, nothing else will. Jesus plus nothing equals everything. Grace does not need human effort added to it in order to save, sustain, or keep anyone.
The crucified life begins with a death, but this death is not self-destruction or a loss of personality. The cross puts to death the right to rule oneself. The believer signs over the title deed of life to God, because Christ purchased that life in full through His blood. The flesh still fights for the throne, but the Spirit calls God’s people to walk in the Spirit rather than live with one foot in Jesus and one foot in the flesh.
The crucified life also requires an exchange: “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” The Holy Spirit indwells every believer, making God’s people His temple. The temple image calls believers to sacrifice, worship, know the Word, and live on mission. Christ does not merely give strength for people to live their own version of the Christian life. Christ becomes the source of life itself. Only Jesus in a person can live Jesus through that person.
Faith carries this life into the right now: marriage, family, work, conflict, success, disappointment, and every other place life happens. Grace does not eliminate effort, but it eliminates self-reliance. Faith is not a kickstand or an emergency plan for when everything falls apart. Faith comes to Jesus before the decision, before the response, before the conversation, and before the hurt.
Love supplies the motive for surrender. The Son of God “loved me and gave himself for me.” The crucified life is not a religious checklist but an invitation into intimacy with an Abba Father. Christ’s finished work, Christ’s ownership, Christ’s life, faith in Christ, and Christ’s love form the whole life of surrender.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus plus nothing equals everything. The cross does not need human merit added to its finished work. Righteousness cannot come through law-keeping, religious activity, or grit, because Christ did not die for nothing. Grace is received, not achieved. [30:52]
- 2. Self-rule dies at the cross. The crucified life does not erase personality, gifts, or calling. The cross removes the claim to be the little-g god of one’s own life. Christ purchased the believer in full, so ownership belongs to Him. [33:52]
- 3. Christ lives through surrendered people. The Christian life cannot be powered by human resolve alone. The Holy Spirit makes believers God’s temple and gives Christ’s life expression through them. Surrender changes the source, control, purpose, and authority of life. [39:12]
- 4. Grace eliminates self-reliance, not effort. Faith is active dependence, not passivity. Obedience, service, suffering, and perseverance still require effort, but none of them can rest on confidence in self. Faith puts Jesus in the driver’s seat before life gets hard. [44:38]
- 5. Love makes surrender personally possible. Christ’s love is not vague or distant; He loved each person and gave Himself for each person. Surrender is not driven by fear of rejection or pressure to perform. The love shown at the cross makes wholehearted belonging the right response.
