Day 4: We are tempted to choose Barabbas—a worldly solution—over Jesus.
Faced with the choice between Jesus and the revolutionary Barabbas, the crowd chose the latter. They preferred a violent insurgent who promised immediate, tangible results over the Messiah who offered a deeper, spiritual salvation through suffering. This decision exposes our own tendency to favor quick, worldly fixes that align with our desires over God’s slower, more profound work of transformation through the cross. [15:32]
“So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, ‘Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Messiah?’…‘What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Messiah?’ Pilate asked. They all answered, ‘Crucify him!’” (Matthew 27:17, 22, NIV)
Reflection: In what practical ways are you, like the crowd, choosing a ‘Barabbas’—a worldly solution that promises immediate relief—over the way of Jesus, which might involve patience, sacrifice, and trust in His ultimate plan?
