Luke places Acts 5:12 to 16 in the aftermath of Ananias and Sapphira, when a holy fear had settled over both the church and the city. The early church gathers publicly in Solomon’s Porch, highly regarded by the people, yet nobody casually dares to join them. Luke holds those two realities together: people are apprehensive about publicly identifying with this body, and record numbers are still being added to the Lord.
The contrast shows that easy to join is not the same thing as worth joining. The word for “dared” carries the idea of courage in the face of something dangerous or costly. The word for “join” carries the sense of being glued together, bonded so deeply that separation changes both sides. The church was not cold, cliquish, or trying to make people pass a test. God’s presence was so obvious that people understood this choice would change their lives forever.
God’s presence also makes clear what the church is really about. Good coffee, good seating, creative services, and welcoming environments can all be good things, but none of them can replace the power of God. The people in Jerusalem saw something divine happening, so they brought the sick, the suffering, and those tormented by unclean spirits. The crowds may have thought Peter’s shadow could heal, but healing never belonged to Peter, the apostles, an object, or an environment. God alone chooses to heal according to His power and His prerogative.
The body of Christ still has a role in bringing hurting people near to God. Christians cannot decide whether God restores health, minds, relationships, or circumstances, but they can carry somebody to Him. The body can pray, bring a meal, mow a lawn, care for children, follow up after loss, and stay near when depression, grief, addiction, or crisis makes God hard to see.
Luke’s language also makes joining passive: the Lord adds people to His body. Nobody earns a place in Christ by volunteering more, giving more, or building a better attendance record. Yet the life God gives is never merely convenient. Christ calls people beyond standing on the other side of the street, admiring the truck from a distance. The courage to cross the road means becoming more than a fan, holding the flashlight, getting involved, being real, and allowing God to make a life part of something bigger.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Easy to join is not enough [42:44] The church should not become a place where nothing is asked and nothing is changed. God’s presence creates both welcome and weight, because being joined to Christ is bigger than joining a group. The value of the body of Christ shows up when belonging means something deep, lasting, and real. [42:44]
- 2. God’s presence cannot be manufactured [50:38] Good environments can serve people, but they cannot produce what only God can do. The city recognized the early church because Christ was clearly the focus, not because the gathering was polished. A life centered on Jesus carries a kind of reality that family, friends, and neighbors can see. [50:38]
- 3. Healing belongs to God alone [53:28] Peter’s shadow was never the source of healing, and neither is any person, object, prayer method, or service style. God heals by His own power and according to His own decision, even when human understanding gets the details wrong. Faith brings need before God without trying to control His prerogative. [53:28]
- 4. Carry hurting people toward Christ [56:23] The body of Christ cannot force healing, but it can refuse to leave suffering people alone. Prayer, meals, follow up, practical care, and steady presence become ways of putting somebody on a mat and carrying them near to Jesus. Love becomes believable when it remains after inconvenience shows up. [56:23]
- 5. Nothing that matters stays convenient [01:00:24] Real connection costs time, vulnerability, money, comfort, and sometimes the right to walk away. The Lord does not add people to Himself so that nothing in life has to change. Courage means choosing faithfulness when small groups, care for others, giving, honesty, and forgiveness interrupt the schedule.
