Bible ReadingLuke 10:25-37 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, 'Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." And Jesus said to him, "You go, and do likewise."

If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled," without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

[01:15:32]Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,"
[01:20:32]Observation questions- What does the lawyer already know about loving God and loving his neighbor, and what question does he ask when he wants to justify himself? [01:12:31]
- What are the different responses of the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan when each one sees the wounded man?
- What practical actions does the Samaritan take to care for the man, and what do those actions cost him in time, attention, and resources? [01:13:37]
- In James 2:14-17, what is missing when a person offers kind words to someone who lacks food and clothing but gives no practical help? [01:17:42]
Interpretation questions- Why might the lawyer’s question, “Who is my neighbor?” reveal a desire to limit the command to love rather than obey it fully?
- The priest and Levite may have had religious reasons for avoiding the wounded man. How can religious activity, personal purity, busyness, or discomfort become excuses for avoiding people in need? [01:16:00]
- James says that faith without works is dead. What kinds of actions show that faith is alive, without suggesting that people earn salvation by their works?
- Jesus describes His mission as good news for the poor, freedom for captives, sight for the blind, and freedom for the oppressed. How should this shape the way believers understand ministry to people with practical and painful needs? [01:20:44]
Application questions- Is there a person whose need is known right now—at work, in the neighbourhood, in the church, or within the family? What would it look like to move toward that person rather than quietly crossing to the other side? [01:22:09]
- When have comfort, fear, uncertainty, or cultural difference made it easier to keep distance from someone? What is one small, respectful step that could help cross that barrier?
- James challenges words that offer peace without providing what is needed for the body. Is there a practical need that could be met this week through food, transport, money, time, a visit, or help finding support?
- It is possible to serve faithfully in church while still missing suffering people nearby. What rhythms or habits could help keep a heart connected to people who are poor, lonely, oppressed, or overlooked? [01:20:32]
- God’s presence can become greater than cultural shock and discomfort. Where might God be inviting greater openness to people, places, or situations that feel unfamiliar or unsettling? [01:25:49]
- A missions seed gives faith a clear place to grow. Would setting aside a small, regular amount for missions, generosity, or a future service trip help turn a good intention into a deliberate act of faith? What might be a realistic first step? [01:31:00]
- The Samaritan did not merely feel compassion; he gave care that cost him something. What comfort, resource, schedule, or preference might God be asking each person to hold more loosely so that mercy can become visible? [01:28:32]
